  • Hegel on Nature in Politics

    Gal Katz, Thimo Heisenberg•ARTICLE•Hegel Bulletin•2026

In recent years, the ancient concept of second nature has become the focus of a growing volume of Hegel-related work in ethics, social philosophy, philosophy of mind, and action theory. And for good reason: second nature allows us to think across, and seeks to bridge, fundamental antagonisms that have haunted modern philosophy since its inception – between the realm of law and the realm of reasons, necessity and freedom, inclination and duty. In …

  • ‘The Power to Die’

    Open Access•Gal Katz•ARTICLE•Hegel Bulletin•2026

Explicating a concept that Hegel coins in his early writings, this paper shows how death—which initially appears as an absolute limitation on human freedom—can be understood as its condition. Understood as ‘the power to die’, our mortality becomes the freedom to negate any determination whatsoever, much as to own and value some determinations. The last section juxtaposes this agentive understanding of mortality against Hegel’s ideal of modern Eth…

  • Sex and the city

    Gal Katz•ARTICLE•Inquiry•2025

Like some ‘second wave’ feminists, Rousseau believes that modern sexual practices are not a manifestation of a newfound autonomy—rather, they reflect its systemic deprivation. Drawing on his critique of libertine culture in eighteenth century Paris, I show how even consensual sex may lead to a chronic deficit of recognition, coupled with psychological misery. To avoid such discontents, sexual freedom must include a satisfying sexual recognition. …

  • Not Exactly White

    Gal Katz•ARTICLE•Contemporary Psychoanalysis•2023

Drawing on Lacan and Winnicott, the author explores the idea that racial difference is dynamically reconfigured in interpersonal space, emerging from the flow of desire between two (or more) people. The argument does not deny—indeed, it presupposes—that race is a socially-constructed given, which delimits or constrains the interaction. And yet, interpersonal space can become a potential space through which we rework and refashion such social cons…

  • Finite freedom

    Open Access•Gal Katz•ARTICLE•European Journal of Philosophy•2022

The article argues that Hegel's glorification of self‐sacrifice in war is grounded in a commitment to individual freedom. Anticipating the existentialists, Hegel believes that being a human individual—a subject who strives to self‐determination and “infinite uniqueness”—involves a contradiction with one's externally determined finitude, which evokes shame and fear of death. In modern civil society, many individuals experience their finite lives a…
