Open Access•Jasmijn van der Veen, Ard J Barends et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Criminology•2026

The current study examined the relation between parental substance abuse and the child's attitude towards violence, and whether this relationship is mediated by parental involvement and the child's self-control. The study used self-report data from the Second International Self-Reported Delinquency Study, a large international study that included data from schools in 30 countries and covered topics related to delinquency and victimization of 12- …

  • Supervision Following Release From Prison and Reoffending During and After the Supervision Period

    Open Access•Suzan Verweij, Karin A Beijersbergen et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2026

The current study examined whether supervision following release from a Dutch prison in 2012 or 2013 relates to reoffending both during and after the supervision period. A combination of matching by variable and Mahalanobis distance matching was used to match supervised persons to persons who were not supervised after release. Multi-state survival models and zero-truncated negative binomial regressions were used to study the risk and frequency of…

  • A Test of the Dual Taxonomy Explanation of Life-Course-Persistent Offending

Open Access•Babette C M van Hazebroek, Lieke Van Domburgh et al.•ARTICLE•Criminal Justice and Behavior•2025

According to Moffitt’s theory of life-course-persistent offending, an early onset of delinquent behavior is often indicative of a pattern of delinquency that is persistent and insusceptible to outside influence. Prior research however has identified ample variation in the delinquent patterns of children who engage in early-onset delinquency, raising questions on the susceptibility of their behavior to external factors. Here, we use longitudinal d…

  • Estimating effects of short-term imprisonment on crime using random judge assignments

    Open Access•Hilde T Wermink, Arjan Blokland et al.•ARTICLE•Justice Quarterly•2024

Noncustodial sanctions may present an attractive way to reduce the prison population rate, but only when noncustodial sanctions meet custodial ones in terms of deterring recidivism. Using administrative criminal records data of all individuals convicted in the Netherlands in 2012, this study examines the effects of short-term imprisonment versus noncustodial sanctions on crime. We employ an instrumental variables approach to account for selection…

  • A Quasi-Experimental Study on the Effects of Community versus Custodial Sanctions in Youth Justice

    Open Access•Gwendolyn J Koops-Geuze, Hilde T Wermink et al.•ARTICLE•Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice•2023

Although community sanctions have become a popular alternative to custodial sanctions in youth justice, primary questions about the recidivism effects of community sanctions remain unanswered. The current study aims to fill this gap through a quasi-experimental analysis of 2-year recidivism differences between 4,425 youth subject to community sanctions versus custodial sanctions in the Netherlands in 2015 and 2016. Recidivism was analyzed in term…

  • Post-Release Source of Income and Convictions of Formerly Incarcerated Adults

    Open Access•Suzan Verweij, Gijs Weijters et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2022

This study examines the relationship between post-release source of income and convictions for different types of crime. Longitudinal data from a sample of formerly incarcerated adults ( n = 10,879) released from Dutch prisons were used. Fixed effects models show that, compared with receiving social benefits, post-release employment is associated with a lower probability of convictions for crime in general, and for property crime. Persons who are…

  • The Criminal Case Processing of Foreign Nationals in the Netherlands

    Open Access•Michael T Light, Hilde Wermink et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 17

Foreign nationals are increasingly encountering the criminal justice institutions of many European countries. Yet, basic questions about how they are punished within these institutions, particularly at the early stages of case processing, remain unanswered. This article combines linked case information from arrest through sentencing with interviews of Dutch judges and prosecutors to fill this gap. Our findings reveal considerable unexplained citi…

  • Het incapacitatie-effect van de eerste gevangenisstraf

    Hilde Wermink, Hilde T Wermink et al.•ARTICLE•Mens & Maatschappij•2011

The incapacitation effect of first-time imprisonment: A matched samples comparison .One sure way that imprisonment prevents crime in the community is by incapacitating offenders. We used official criminal records data of all individuals convicted in the Netherlands in 1997 to provide estimates of the incapacitation effect of first-time imprisonment. Two different analytical strategies were applied for the estimation of the incapacitation effect. …
