Student Homelessness in a County Governance Landscape: Fragmented Systems, Disconnected Schools
In this qualitative case study, I examined how a large urban county designed and implemented a homelessness-response strategy and the extent to which the strategy incorporated students experiencing homelessness and public education systems. Drawing on document analysis and 22 interviews with policymakers, service providers, and education leaders, the study found that, despite high rates of student homelessness, PreK-12 education agencies were lar…
Link, Love, & Persist: Community Building, Academic Persistence, and Resistance Practices Facilitated by a Black Male Student College Retention Intervention
Although a growing number of universities have created programs intended to increase the retention of Black male students, their graduation rates continue to lag in comparison to many other groups. This suggests more empirical research is needed to understand and develop programs, practices, and interventions that are effective in supporting their outcomes. This mixed qualitative study examines a first-year student transition program at a large r…
Resource Hopping: Examining the Policy Barriers Faced and Strategies Used to Establish Partnerships for Students Experiencing Homelessness
Effective support for students experiencing homelessness requires collaboration and coordination within and between agencies. However, this can be difficult for communities with limited resources and majority Black and Latino populations. This article explores the challenges faced by a divested urban school district in establishing meaningful community partnerships for supporting homeless students. Using an anti-deficit achievement framework and …
The Cambridge History of the Age of Atlantic Revolutions
Volume II delves into the revolutions of France, Europe, and Haiti, with particular focus on the French Revolution and the changes it wrought. The demarcation between property and power, and the changes in family life, religious practices, and socio-economic relations are explored, as well as the preoccupation with violence and terror, both of which were conspicuous aspects of the revolution. Simultaneous movements in England, Germany, Hungary, I…
Hidden Success: Learning From the Counternarratives of High School Graduates Impacted by Student Homelessness
The number of youth experiencing homelessness in the United States has nearly doubled over the past decade from 688,000 in 2006 to over 1.3 million as of 2017. While graduating high school is a significant barrier for many students experiencing homelessness, many youth are able to successfully graduate despite their unstable living conditions. This qualitative study used the antideficit achievement framework to analyze the counternarratives of ei…

Who Are the Homeless? Centering Anti-Black Racism and the Consequences of Colorblind Homeless Policies
Since first becoming a major social issue in the 1980s, homelessness has been a racialized problem in the United States. Its disproportionate impact on Black Americans is primarily driven by structural racism and the limited housing and employment opportunities for Black Americans. The first major federal legislation to address the needs of the United States' homeless population-the Stewart B. McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act of 1987 omitte…
Black Spartacus: The Epic Life of Toussaint Louverture by Sudhir Hazareesingh
Haitian Revolutionary leader Toussaint Louverture has been the focus of many plays, novels, children’s books, illustrated histories, and biographies since the nineteenth century. Yet, Louverture’s story has seemed elusive to scholars until just recently. In this biography, Hazareesingh works “to return as far as possible to the primary sources, to try to see the world through [Louverture’s] eyes, and to recapture the boldness of his thinking and …
Listening to formerly homeless youth
More than 1.5 million students experienced homelessness in the 2017-18 school year, but teachers receive little guidance on how to support them. Earl Edwards provides K-12 (particularly high school) teachers with an overview of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and concrete recommendations for how to better support youth experiencing homelessness in their pursuit to graduate high school. The recommendations are derived from a study that …
William S. Cormack. Patriots, Royalists, and Terrorists in the West Indies: The French Revolution in Martinique and Guadeloupe, 1789–1802
It has been sixteen years since Frédéric Régent published Esclavage, métissage, liberté: La Révolution française en Guadeloupe, 1789–1802 and Laurent Dubois wrote A Colony of Citizens: Revolution and Slave Emancipation in the French Caribbean, 1787–1804 in 2004. While these Atlantic histories focus on how peoples of African descent in Guadeloupe affected revolutionary change, William S. Cormack draws attention to tensions between whites in the Le…
