Wage Flexibility, Exchange-Rate Competitiveness and Full Employment
This paper discusses Keynes' and Kalecki's rejection of the notion that downward wage flexibility would ensure full employment, recollecting also Steindl's stagnation theory, which extends to the long-run Kalecki's ideas. It then considers the association between wage fall and currency depreciation and examines the Latin American contribution to the arguments of why currency devaluation may depress aggregate demand. Afterwards, it briefly reflect…
Fiscal policy and private investment
The main objective of the paper is to assess the impact of fiscal variables on private investment comparing some Latin-American economies to other advanced ones. For such purposes, the authors carry out an econometric analysis for the period 1990-2008. They make use of two dynamic panel models in which they group countries with similar characteristics and development levels. In one of them, they include Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Uruguay…
Mexico's Economic Prospects Reconsidered
The paper discusses an alternative macroeconomic strategy proposal for Mexico. The author argues that, in the short-run the primary task should be to put to work idle resources, and that a competitive and stable real exchange rate, coupled with supply-side measures that benefit domestic producers, can contribute to make higher domestic production competitive. Speeding-up growth in the near future would make it easier to achieve a high growth rate…
Michal Kalecki, um pioneiro da teoria econômica do desenvolvimento
Kalecki made important contributions to development economics, which rank him among the founding fathers of this area of our discipline. The objective of this paper is to give an account of his contributions, and in particular of his conception of the peculiarities and the way of functioning of the underdeveloped economies, and of the barriers that limits their capacity for high and sustained long run growth. As most socialist economists of his t…
Resuming growth in Latin America
The authors of this paper assert that the paralysis of the state generated by the crises of the 1970s and 1980s deprived the economies of the region of an important lever to resume and sustain growth. They thus maintain that to overcome stagnation it will be necessary to reconstruct the state's capacity to implement pro-growth policies. Following Keynes and Kalecki's ideas, but also classical development economists, the authors argue, first, that…
Are Full Employment Policies Obsolete
Full employment policies fell into disfavor in the industrial countries in thelate 1970s, when concerns about accelerating inflation became overwhelm-ing. In developing economies, on the other hand, emphasis had always beengiven to high growth policies, rather than full employment as such. The tur-bulences of the 1970s proved to be fatal to those policies as well. As a result, full employment policies seemed to be doomed since then.Although allege…

Enfatizamos …
The potential of Mexican agriculture and options for the future
Mexican agriculture, which bad deteriorated as a result of the global adjustment process, only began to recover as from 1989. If the recovery of the national economy which began in 1987 becomes even more marked, it is possible that agriculture may not be able to respond with increased production
