The ‘lost’ account book of the Academy of Vocal (later Ancient) Music, 1726–1731)
The account book of the London Academy of Vocal (later Ancient) Music (1726-31) forms the first part of a manuscript acquired by the library of the Paris Conservatoire in 1858. It went missing when, a hundred years later, it was transferred to the Bibliothèque Nationale and the second part catalogued as MS F. Rés. 1507. It did not surface again until the spring of 2020, too late to be included in the author’s long article on the history, repertoi…
The Academy of Ancient Music (1726–1802)
It was way back in the mid-1960s that I first became interested in the Academy of Ancient Music, and I have been collecting stray scraps of information relating to them ever since. Fifty years on, methinks it’s high time I shared my findings with the world of eighteenth-century musical scholarship at large. Others meanwhile have dealt with various bits of the story, but no one so far as I know has yet attempted to bring it all together in one pla…
Westminster Abbey and the Academy of Ancient Music
As the first body anywhere to concern itself with the performance of ‘early’ music, the Academy of Ancient Music (founded in 1726) is of some historical importance. When, in 1802, the society was eventually disbanded, its famous library was broken up and dispersed via the London sale rooms. Later on, some fifty or so manuscripts and a small group of prints somehow found their way into the library of Westminster Abbey, where they have lain unnotic…
Claver Morris, an Early Eighteenth-Century English Physician and Amateur Musician Extraordinaire
Claver Morris (1659–1727) was a West Country physician and keen amateur musician. Based in Wells, he was the moving spirit (and possibly founder) of the local music society. A filleted version of his diaries and account books was published in 1934, but the originals have not been closely examined since. They offer a wealth of information about musical (and social) life in the provinces, and fascinating details of the music he heard, performed, bo…
To Fill, Forbear, or Adorne
If you have ever had occasion to examine a late seventeenth-century English organ book containing anthems and services, you must have wondered, as has the author of this book, what the status of the document you were looking at was, and how it was actually used in performance. With the two outermost parts fully notated, one on each of two staves, and nothing much in between save an indication (in contrapuntal textures) of incoming imitative entri…
