  • Attention and social problems are uniquely associated with academic achievement beyond overall psychopathology

Open Access•George Tragoudas, Zehra E Ünal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2026

BACKGROUND: Understanding which specific behavioral and emotional problems are uniquely associated with achievement and thus potential targets for developing educational interventions. METHODS: Child Behavior Checklist syndrome scales and standardized measures of mathematics and reading achievement were analyzed using structural equation modeling in a community California cohort (N = 252) and the clinically diverse Healthy Brain Network cohort (N…

  • The language of folding

    Open Access•Lisa M Ridgley, David C Geary et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2025

Although crucial for mathematical problem solving and long-term STEM achievement, visuospatial skills remain a significant challenge for many students in the United States. Therefore, it is critical to explore how spatial skill interventions can be integrated into mathematics curriculum. This research examines the effects of Project VisMO, a hands-on, origami-based curriculum and after-school program, on elementary school children's visuospatial …

  • Development and initial validation of a mathematics-specific spatial vocabulary scale

    Open Access•Zehra E Ünal, Lisa M Ridgley et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2023

This study describes the development and initial validation of a mathematics-specific spatial vocabulary measure for upper elementary school students. Reviews of spatial vocabulary items, mathematics textbooks, and Mathematics Common Core State Standards identified 720 mathematical terms, 148 of which had spatial content (e.g., edge). In total, 29 of these items were appropriate for elementary students, and a pilot study (59 fourth graders) indic…

  • Sex differences in developmental pathways to mathematical competence

    Open Access•David C Geary, Mary K Hoard et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Psychology•2023

grade mathematical competence was influenced by a combination of general cognitive ability, spatial abilities, and in-class attention. General cognitive ability was important for both sexes but the spatial pathway to mathematical competence was relatively more important for boys and the in-class attention pathway for girls

  • Sex differences and similarities in relations between mathematics achievement, attitudes, and anxiety

    Open Access•David C Geary, Mary K Hoard et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Psychology•2023

There are consistent correlations between mathematics achievement, attitudes, and anxiety, but the longitudinal relations among these constructs are not well understood nor are sex differences in these relations. To address this gap, mathematics achievement, attitudes, and anxiety were longitudinally assessed for 342 (169 boys) adolescents from 7th to 9th grade, inclusive, and Latent Growth Curve Models were used to assess the relations among the…

  • Examining the mutual relations between language and mathematics

Peng, Peng Peng et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2020•Cited by: 3

42, 95% CI [.40, .44]. Moderation and partial correlation analyses revealed the following: (a) more complicated language and mathematics skills were associated with stronger relations between language and mathematics; after partialing out working memory and intelligence, rapid automatized naming showed the strongest relation to numerical knowledge; (b) the relation between language and mathematics was stronger among native language speakers than …
