A Pilot Study of Sentence Writing Instruction for a First Grader with a Learning Disability
Sentence writing is a critical early writing skill (Kim et al., 2014) but is often overlooked in empirical literature (McMaster et al., 2018). The current pilot study evaluated the effect of a set of explicit sentence writing lessons on a first grader’s writing and identified the types of errors made before and during instruction. The participant was a 6-year-old white male with a learning disability. An exploratory AB single case design was used…
Sentence Writing Instruction for Young Struggling Writers
Sentence writing is a critical early writing skill but intervention research in this area has typically lagged behind other aspects of writing, particularly for students with or at-risk for writing difficulties. This multiple baseline across participants single-case study evaluated the effect of a sentence writing intervention on the writing of early elementary grade struggling writers. The three second-grade participants received daily lessons o…
Increasing pre-teacher engagement in university instruction using Pear Deck
Pear Deck is an online active learning presentation tool designed to aid teachers in creating impactful lessons. As higher education continues to evolve by implementing various course formats, there is a great need to discover which technology tools have the potential to increase student engagement. In this qualitative study, the authors examine 37 preservice teachers’ perceptions regarding the usefulness of Pear Deck in increasing engagement, an…
Early academic and behavior skills as predictors of later mathematics achievement
Early academic skills and behavioral characteristics in students are predictive of later school achievement, but academics and behavior are commonly compartmentalized in research and practice. This study investigated to what extent first‐grade early numeracy (EN), literacy, and behavior ratings predicted fourth‐grade mathematics achievement. In fall of first‐grade, 501 students were given EN and literacy measures and a behavior rating scale compl…
A literature synthesis of curriculum‐based measurement in writing for English learners
The purpose of this article is to systematically examine the literature around Curriculum Based Measurement in Writing (CBM‐W) for English learners (ELs) in English. We reviewed the literature to identify published research studies examining CBM‐W that disaggregated data for ELs. We identified six published studies examining the technical adequacy of CBM‐W specifically for ELs. The studies examined a variety of types of CBM‐W across diverse popul…
Supporting teachers’ use of data-based instruction to improve students’ early writing skills
We examined the effects of a professional development (PD) system designed to support teachers’ use of data-based instruction (DBI) to improve early writing outcomes for children with intensive needs. The PD system, called DBI-TLC, provided tools for early writing assessment and intervention, learning modules including face-to-face workshops followed by classroom application, and ongoing coaching to support DBI implementation. Special education t…
