How preservice mathematics teachers construct criteria for worthwhile mathematical activities from written reflections
This qualitative study examines how 81 pre-service mathematics teachers articulate and justify criteria for judging whether a mathematical activity is worthwhile. Using post-module written reflections and reflexive thematic analysis, we trace how participants construct inclusionary and exclusionary criteria and the boundaries they draw around quality. Five themes organize their evaluative reasoning: cognitive demand and depth, student engagement …
What Drives Coding Adoption in Mathematics Teacher Education? Insights from an Extended UTAUT Model
This study investigates the factors influencing pre-service mathematics teachers’ intentions to integrate coding into their instructional practices, using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) as its theoretical foundation. While coding is widely recognized as a crucial digital competency, its effective integration into mathematics education depends on various motivational and contextual variables. The study was conducted…
Assessing middle school students’ computational thinking through mathematical modeling
This study investigates how middle school students enact computational thinking (CT) through mathematical modeling tasks in regular instruction. Conducted as practitioner-led action research over 4 weeks with 28 seventh-grade students in a Turkish public school, we collected student artifacts, classroom observations, and short interviews. A qualitative content analysis combined deductive codes for five CT dimensions with inductive categories; tri…
Instructional design in mathematics education enriched with design thinking and computational thinking
This study reports the design and evaluation of a Computational Thinking integrated Design Thinking (CTiDT) instructional model for Grade 7 mathematics. Computational Thinking (CT) includes practices such as decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition, and algorithmic design, while Design Thinking (DT) provides a human-centered, iterative approach to real-world problem solving. In CTiDT, CT processes were embedded into each DT phase to suppor…
Effectiveness and guidance of artificial intelligence chatbots in diagnosing exponential expression errors
The aim of this study is to evaluate the capacity of ChatGPT-4 and Gemini chatbots in detecting and addressing students’ misconceptions related to exponential expressions. Responses from nine students in southern Türkiye to a conceptual test on exponential expressions were analyzed by these chatbots. The findings indicate that both ChatGPT-4 and Gemini were partially successful in identifying and correcting students’ misconceptions. However, Chat…
