Implications of What Works Clearinghouse Guidelines on Single-Case Design
The What Works Clearinghouse quality standards provide guidance regarding studies capable of supporting evidence-based practices. Standards concerning single-case designs have been extensively revised to accommodate new evaluation methods, such as the design comparable effect size. These designs often omit data in which children and other participants receive training. Recently, the What Works Clearinghouse suggested studies with such “empty trai…
A Meta-Analytic Review of Spelling Interventions for Students With or At-Risk for Learning Disabilities
Spelling is a vital academic skill that supports students’ writing and reading development (Kim, 2020). We conducted a comprehensive meta-analytic review of spelling interventions with students with or at-risk for learning disabilities (LDs) employing randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental designs, and single-case designs. Fifty-nine studies met inclusion criteria—39 group design and 20 single-case design (SCD) studies—comprising 2,229 …
Automatic Morphological Processing in Middle School Students with and without Word Reading Difficulties
Morphological processing is the use of morphological structure during word reading. This study investigated whether middle school students applied morphological structure automatically when reading words. In addition, this study asked whether students with word reading difficulties (WRD) applied morphological structure in a way that differed from proficient word readers. Participants were seventh- and eighth-grade students (n = 80). Students were…
Writing Interventions for Students With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are likely to experience writing challenges that can negatively impact their overall academic, vocational, and social success. The goals of this study were to determine what writing interventions have been used with students with IDD, how their writing skills have been measured, the effects of those interventions, and study-level moderators via meta-analytic procedures. We identified…
Meta-Analyses of Reading Intervention Studies Including Students With Learning Disabilities
Learning disabilities (LD) may affect a range of academic skills but are most often observed in reading. Researchers and policymakers increasingly recommend addressing reading difficulties encountered by students with LD using evidence-based practices, or interventions validated through multiple, high-quality research studies. A valuable tool in identifying evidence-based practices is the meta-analysis, which entails statistically aggregating the…
Comprehensive Meta-Analysis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Psychosocial Treatments Investigated Within Between Group Studies
Interventions for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) include positive behavior supports (e.g., parent training, school-based contingency management, behavioral peer interventions), training interventions (e.g., organizational skills training, social skills training, etc.), and other interventions (e.g., academic accommodations/modifications, self-monitoring). There is a need to conduct a comprehensive meta-analysis of psychosocial tr…
The writing abilities of juvenile justice youths
To better understand the writing skills of juvenile offenders and the components of their writing abilities, this study explored extant data from six measures of adolescents’ writing skills administered upon their entrance into a juvenile justice facility. Overall, the 235 students (ages 13–16; Grades 5–11) exhibited low scores on all writing measures, but there was a wide range in their performance with some students scoring at or near ceiling. …
