  • The Design & Pitch Challenges in STEM

Open Access•Michael Belcher, Jere Confrey et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2025

Solving many of the pressing issues facing the world today will require a deep and integrated understanding of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). To prepare today’s K-12 students to tackle these challenges, STEM education must create opportunities to learn disciplinary content while inventing actionable solutions to messy, interdisciplinary problems. Learning frameworks, such as Project-Based Learning (PBL), Design-Based Le…

  • Designing to transform

Open Access•Margaret L Borden, Michael Belcher et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Educational Research•2025

As educators pursue more authentic and relevant approaches to mathematics instruction, it is essential to understand how students reason mathematically in innovative learning environments. This study examines students’ reasoning with geometric transformations during a summer camp, in which they used dynamic geometry environments (DGEs) to design transforming, multi-functional products. Student artifacts were analyzed using two frameworks on reaso…

  • Abstinence from smoking and expired-air carbon monoxide levels

    Allan Mcneill, A D McNeill et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 4•References: 6

We investigated a possible source of contamination of expired-air carbon monoxide (CO) readings on CO monitors from raised expired-air hydrogen (H2) levels, namely lactose intolerance, the norm in certain ethnic groups. A significant correlation between expired-air CO and H2 readings was observed in four non-smoking lactose maldigesters

  • District programme to reduce smoking

    Michael A Russell, J A Stapleton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1988•References: 6

A total of 101 general practitioners in 27 practices in inner London took part in a quasi-experimental study designed to examine whether a brief intervention applied to all smokers seen by general practitioners and sustained on a continuous basis could in time have a cumulative effect and reduce the prevalence of smoking among their patients. Of 21 practices approached in our local district (Camberwell), seven were willing to undertake brief inte…
