Importance and Challenges of Biodiversity Research Incorporating Geodiversity
First, a comprehensive review is conducted of recent studies examining the interplay between the diversity of physical geographic environments, primarily shaped by landforms, and biodiversity within mountainous regions. Global warming increases the threat of the extinction of flora and fauna in alpine zones. Meanwhile, the role of landforms and geomorphic processes as refugia for cold-adapted species has garnered attention for potentially mitigat…

Massive Rock Avalanche Deposits at the Glaciated Tanbosawa Basin, East Face of Mount Tateyama (Oyama), Northern Japanese Alps, Central Japan
A thick mass of and unsorted debris is located in a valley-head cirque in the Tateyama area of the Northern Japanese Alps. The debris shows a characteristic deformation structure with jigsaw cracks, dike-like injections of fines, and shearing. Therefore it is judged to be composed of massive rock avalanche materials that are not of glacial or fluvial origin. Based on the cosmogenic nuclide exposure ages of granitic boulders, the debris is covered…
Evidence Discovered that the Manaitayama Rockslide in Northern Nagano Prefecture Occurred Prior to the AD 1502 Echigo-Nanseibu Earthquake
A large-scale rockslide occurred at the western side of the summit of Mount Manaitayama in the Otari Mountains. Several estimates have been proposed regarding the timing of the rockslide. Two small plant macrofossils were discovered directly below dammed-lake deposits formed by the rockslide, and their radiocarbon (14C) ages were measured. Using the latest data set and a calibration program, it is found that the two samples died between cal AD 14…

Blockslopes Caused by Large to Meso-scale Rock Slope Failures in the Upper Okumatajirodani Valley on the Eastern Side of Mount Maehotaka-dake North Ridge, Northern Japanese Alps
The geomorphological and geological characteristics, distributions, and ages of block slopes that developed at two alluvial cones (Bentenzawa valley and Okumatazirodani valley) along the Azusa River in the Kamikochi area, northern Japanese Alps, are clarified. These block slopes were believed to be of Pleistocene glacial origin in previous studies. A field survey was conducted, applying microtremor array observations to estimate subsurface geolog…
