  • Repeating Earthquakes in the Continental Crust and Subducting Slabs, and Seismological and Tectonic Implications: Proposal for an Extended Fault-valve Model

Open Access•Akira Hasegawa, Junichi NAKAJIMA•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography (Chigaku…•2024

It has become clear that repeating earthquakes (repeaters) prevalently occur not only at plate boundaries but also in the continental crust and subducting slabs, coexisting with regular earthquakes (Nakajima and Hasegawa, 2023). Based on this prevalent occurrence of repeaters, previous research is reviewed and the generation mechanism of inland crustal and intraslab earthquakes and its seismological and tectonic implications are discussed. Furthe…

  • Low-frequency Earthquakes in the Continental Plate and Their Seismological and Tectonic Implications

Open Access•Akira Hasegawa, Junichi NAKAJIMA•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography (Chigaku…•2022

Low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs) occurring in the continental plate are reviewed. Most LFEs in the continental plate occur at depths of ∼15-45 km in the uppermost mantle to the lower crust beneath volcanoes, but they also occur within the same depth range beneath non-volcanic areas. Because they occur at greater depths than the typical depth limit for shallow regular earthquakes, they are called “deep low-frequency earthquakes (deep LFE).” Howeve…
