  • Seafarers and the seashore

Open Access•T Carter, Emma Lipsett et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

Water worn pebbles were dedicated at many later Bronze Age peak sanctuaries of Minoan Crete and the Minoanized Aegean, including Stelida on Naxos (Cyclades). While most of this assemblage (n = 10,713) is comprised of locally available quartzites and granodiorites, it also included a few obsidian pebbles, a raw material foreign to Naxos. This study used portable XRF spectrometry [pXRF] to elementally characterize and source six of these artifacts,…

  • Reflections on the Circulation of Extraordinary Items in Early Chalcolithic Southwest Asia

R Shimelmitz, Tristan Carter et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Society…•2025

The 6th-millennium b.c. obsidian mirror and giant blade core from Kabri, northern Israel, have long been considered epitomes of Southwest Asian Early Chalcolithic technical and artistic virtuosity. Nevertheless, even almost 70 years after their discovery, they are yet to be integrated into the growing body of research on obsidian circulation from Anatolian sources to prehistoric communities of the southern Levant. This paper presents for the firs…

  • In‐depth study of a speiss/matte sample from Castillo de Huarmey, North Coast of Peru, and its implications for the pre‐Columbian production of arsenic bronze in the Central Andes

Open Access•Rafał Warchulski, Maciej Kałaska et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 57

This study aims to characterize the phase composition and chemistry of the speiss/matte sample from the Metallurgist's Burial at Castillo de Huarmey and to use the information derived from these analyses to infer the temperatures, furnace conditions, and ores associated with the smelting processes, which created the speiss/matte sample. For this purpose, a number of geochemical analyses were performed on the spies/matte fragment: analysis of the …

  • Moche chronology of ancient Peru

Open Access•Michele L Koons, Branden Cesare Rizzuto et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2024

In the last decade Bayesian analysis of radiocarbon dates has become commonplace for archaeologists grappling with regional chronologies. Here we present Bayesian analysis for radiocarbon dates from Moche cultural contexts from the north coast of Peru with the aim to understand the duration of the phenomenon and to compile all known dates in a single location for future analysis and use. The analysis demonstrates that the long-standing Moche cera…

  • Late Intermediate Period Funerary Traditions, Population Aggregation, and the Ayllu in the Sihuas Valley, Peru

Open Access•J Jennings, Willy Yépez Álvarez et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 53

The Late Intermediate period in the south-central Andes is known for the widespread use of open sepulchres called chullpas by descent-based ayllus to claim rights to resources and express idealized notions of how society should be organized. Chullpas, however, were rarer on the coast, with the dead often buried individually in closed tombs. This article documents conditions under which these closed tombs were used at the site of Quilcapampa on th…
