From aesthetic idealism to national concerns
It has been argued that Antonio Machado was a late-comer to the so-called Generation of ‘98 and that, with his Campos de Castilla of 1912, he belatedly joined the general chorus for reform of his contemporary writers (Azorín, Baroja, etc.) and began to voice concerns with the backwardness of Castilian rural life and ‘the problem of Spain’ already broached earlier by the so-called Generation of ’98. In effect, Campos de Castilla continues much of …
José María Luis Bruna, Second Marqués de Campo (1877–1916)
The Marqués de Campo barely figures in the literary histories of fin de siglo poetic practice. His works have, almost entirely, fallen into obscurity. The re-publication in 2006 of his second poetic collection, Alma glauca of 1904, the high point of the new Symbolist-Decadent poetic experiment, affords us the opportunity to re-assess this forgotten poet. This collection reveals a poet of some talent whose travels in Greece and the Levant made rea…
Whatever Happened to Francisco Villaespesa? Further Considerations
Villaespesa was a major player in the first guerra literaria (c.1898–1902). From 1902 he found a new style but never associated with the writers centred on the magazine Helios in a second guerra literaria. Further collections he published also failed to capture the new Symbolist style of Jiménez and Machado. From 1912, engaged in his Moorish dramas and absent on lengthy visits to Latin America, he disappeared from the Madrid literary scene. Villa…
San Juan de la Cruz's ‘La noche oscura’ and Symbolism
San Juan de la Cruz's ‘mystical’ ‘En una noche oscura’ has received considerable critical attention both theological as much as literary. How can the mystical experience be expressed in verse? Despite many literary approaches to this poem, and other related ‘sacred’ poems, approaches that relate these verses to the poet's ‘mystical’ experiences, no critic has read, to my knowledge, ‘En una noche oscura’ from a close hermeneutical viewpoint. Such …

Luis de Oteyza's ¡Viva el rey
Luis de Oteyza (1883–1961) is virtually unknown to students today. Yet in the decade 1921–1931 he produced republican pamphlets, travelogues and eight novels, pioneered radio broadcasting and directed a major journal which commanded a popular following. !Viva el rey! (1929) belongs to the vogue for Ruritanian novels, set as it is in a fictitious Balkan kingdom. Adriapi Jiménez, a rich wine-producer, is, by an accident of birth, offered the throne…
