  • Glossenstudien

Katerina Somers•ARTICLE•The Journal of English and…•2025

Glossenstudien is a volume compiled by scholars in the field of early German glosses for scholars in the field of early German glosses. While the editors express in the final paragraph of their introduction the desire that their volume elucidate the “immense cultural and historical significance of the tradition of Old High German and Old Saxon glosses” (p. 11), the work deals primarily with the process of research on glosses and the state of the …

  • On the Grammaticality of Poetry

    Open Access•Katerina Somers•ARTICLE•Journal of Germanic Linguistics•2021

This article discusses asyndetic verb-late clauses in Otfrid’s Evangelienbuch , which has long been considered a problematic text within the Old High German corpus in part because of clauses like these. Clauses with a dependent clause’s verbal syntax and no complementizer have been characterized as ungrammatical and/or rare (Behaghel 1932, Schrodt 2004, Axel 2007) and thus have not been included in accounts of early German syntax. I argue that as…

  • Regularizing Rhythms

    Katerina Somers•ARTICLE•Monatshefte•2021

In this article I investigate meter as a linchpin in the process by which a ninth-century literary culture encroaches on a long-standing oral tradition. I focus on two ninth-century texts, the Old Saxon Hêliand by an unknown poet and Otfrid von Weissenburg’s Frankish Liber Evangeliorum . Both poets tell the story of the life of Christ, but the motivations behind their texts are different. The Hêliand is intended for recalcitrant Saxons, who still…

  • Verb-third in Otfrid’s Evangelienbuch

    Katerina Somers•ARTICLE•NOWELE. North-Western European…•2018

This article investigates the status of so-called verb-final declaratives in Otfrid’s Evangelienbuch , with a focus on whether clauses in which there is no apparent subordinator and the finite verb occurs later than the expected verb-first or verb-second position can be treated as verb-third (V3) clauses, as they are defined for Old High German in works such as Axel (2007) and Tomaselli (1995) . Drawing on a set of 746 clauses, I argue that there…

  • The Introduction and Extension of the -st Ending in Old High German

    Open Access•Katerina Somers•ARTICLE•Journal of Germanic Linguistics•2011

This article seeks to explain the synchronic variation found in the second person singular inflectional ending (attested both as -s and - st ) in the Old High German Evangelienbuch , while at the same time pro-viding a diachronic account of the introduction and extension of the - st ending in German. In order to achieve these goals, in my analysis I rely on the notions of cliticization and formal analogy, arguing that the innovative and original …
