  • Our Stories, Our Future

    David J Minderhout, Jessica D Dowsett•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•2010

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania takes the stance that there are no Native Americans within the borders of the state, but as in the rest of the United States there has been over the last three decades a rising consciousness among Pennsylvanians with some native ancestry of their cultural heritage. These people contend that they are descended from intermarriages between colonial Europeans and the indigenous Lenape or Susquehannock peoples, and tha…

The museum has served as an anchor point for people claiming Native American ancestry in the state in the absence of a reservation or an on-going community of native people. Claiming native heritage in Pennsylvania is a difficult propos…

Language speaker-listeners do not merely mouth sounds or put together syntax; they perform to affect an audience. Anthropologists since Boas's time have written extensively about how speaker-listeners use language to amuse, amaze, persuade, and seduce. Joel Sherzer catalogs puns, jokes, word games, and poetry using examples from several languages. Josef Stern argues that the ability to understand metaphor is a rule-ordered part of language compet…
