Changing mindsets in prison
The study, conducted within the Israeli prison system, examines the psychological mechanisms that support correctional clients’ engagement with restorative justice (RJ), with a focus on incremental beliefs. It examines whether a psychological intervention aimed at strengthening these beliefs can affect attitudes toward RJ and the effectiveness of a victim awareness program (VAP). Using a randomized controlled design (N = 153), participants were a…

We believe implementing them in prison is likely to provide access to RJ to a wider population. Twenty-three adult correctional clients were interviewed about their attitudes towa…
The Role of Proneness to Guilt and Shame Among People in Custody in Promoting Restorative Justice Processes
This research examined the role of guilt and shame proneness among people in custody in shaping attitudes toward restorative justice (RJ) and in predicting the effectiveness of RJ practices. Study 1 ( n = 110) examined the correlation between participant guilt and shame proneness and willingness to participate in an RJ process. It revealed that proneness to guilt, but not to shame, was correlated with willingness to participate in an RJ process. …
Promoting Inmates’ Positive Attitudes toward Participating in a Restorative Justice Process
In the present study, we conducted an empirical experiment to examine whether exposure to a victim awareness procedure would affect inmates’ attitudes toward participating in a restorative-justice process. In addition, the study sought to evaluate whether there are differences between inmates serving their sentences in prisons with different therapeutic orientations. The findings indicate that participants who were exposed to a victim awareness p…
Does Character Similarity Increase Identification and Persuasion?
The identity of protagonists in persuasive narratives was varied to test the impact of audience-character demographic similarity on identification. In Study 1, sex and nationality, both traits that were pretested to be important to participants’ self-identity, were varied, but demographic similarity did not increase perceived similarity, identification or persuasion. In Study 2, age and city of residence, traits that were central to the story, we…
