Unbuilt Sanctuary Basilicas: Unfulfilled Dreams for Dutch Pilgrimage Sites1
Within the larger context of pilgrimage studies, it makes sense to study unrealized plans for sanctuary buildings at pilgrimage sites. Architect drawings for pilgrimage sanctuaries imagine the future of the cult site, revealing the directors’ expectations, and disclosing the architect’s dreams. Nevertheless, scant attention is paid to them. The current study, based on Dutch examples, seeks to remedy this. It finds that the unbuilt basilicas expos…
Pilgrimage in the Netherlands: Culture, Change, Research1
Based on a national survey of pilgrimage practices, this article explores the development of pilgrimage culture in the Netherlands from the beginning of the Common Era to the 21st century. The article opens with a historiographical overview, examining both the scholarly research on pilgrimage and the key figures involved in its study. It then traces the main phases of pilgrimage activity in the Low Countries: from late antiquity, through the Midd…

Cross Mountain and Apparition Hill
This article examines and interprets the phenomenon of Medjugorje as a new religious phenomenon. The name of this Bosnian-Herzegovinian village not only refers to a long series of Marian apparitions, but it is also used as a metaphor for the religious and political developments that occur in relation to those visions. The argument is that in the context of interaction with nationalist agendas and church politics, Medjugorje must be seen as a cont…
On Scholarly Misconduct and Fraud, and What We Can Learn from It
This article deals with the scholarly misconduct committed by the former Amsterdam Free University (VU) cultural anthropologist, Professor Mart Bax, who received international acclaim during the last three decades of the twentieth century for his fieldwork and research in Ireland, the Netherlands, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, and for applying his “theory” of competing religious regimes. Despite earlier suspicions, it was only a decade after his retire…

Mobocracy and Monarchy a Ritualistic Reconciliation With the Anachronism of the Dutch Monarchy
The relation of the Dutch people towards their monarchy has always been ambiguous. The celebration of the monarch’s birthday has become a festive and massive expression of Orangeism, turning the event into a national feast day for all. The celebration is, however, characterized by a certain suspension of rules (“freemarkets”) and brings up forms of social inversion und charivaresque behaviour towards the House of Orange. This contribution examine…
Mary’s Reincarnation and the Banality of Salvation: The Millennialist Cultus of the Lady of All Nations/Peoples
This article deals with the transnational Dutch-Canadian apparitional cultus of our Lady of All Nations/Peoples. It analyses how contemporary visionary Catholicism is influenced by religious eclecticism, esotericism, and New Age spiritualities, and how this devotion has shifted into an autonomous millennialist movement. Finding fertile soil in modern societies in socio-economic, political, and religious crisis, and due to the dwindling of existen…
Grassroots Memorials: The Politics of Memorializing Traumatic Death
Grassroots memorials have become major areas of focus during times of trauma, danger, and social unrest. These improvised memorial assemblages continue to display new and more dynamic ways of representing collective and individual identities and in doing so reveal the steps that shape the national memories of those who struggle to come to terms with traumatic loss. This volume focuses on the hybrid quality of these temporary memorials as both mon…
Marian Interventions in the Wars of Ideology: The Elastic Politics of the Roman Catholic Church on Modern Apparitions
Since 1945, the Western world has recorded a sharp increase in Marian apparitions and messages, which in terms of frequency, content, structure and representation differ from those of previous centuries. The often oppositional content is actively disseminated by traditionalist and fundamentalist Catholics and devotees, and generates cults and shrines which turn away from or disassociate themselves from the Catholic Church. On the basis of two rel…
Memorialising Europe
In the economic and political unification process of Europe, the idea of the creation of a pan-European identity was put high on the political agenda. With the failure of this effort, the emphasis shifted to the apparently less fraught concept of 'shared cultural heritage'. This article analyses how the politically guided rediscovery of Europe's past has contributed to the creation of a 'Religion of Heritage', not only by raising up a political a…

Reframing Dutch Culture: Between Otherness and Authenticity
In recent years, Dutch society has undergone radical transformations, due to complex political, social and ethnic developments. This book provides an interdisciplinary analysis of these changes at different levels, also relating them to wider European and global transformation processes. Examining the formations of Dutch identity, it discusses topical issues such as Turkish immigrants, ethnic tensions, and the transformations in religion, dress a…

Contested rituals and the battle for public space: The Netherlands
INTRODUCTION ‘Zurück!’ (Stand back!) shouted Pastor Quaedvlieg, a priest from the Prussian border town of Haaren, when he and the members of his procession were brought to a halt by three Dutch national policemen in the autumn of 1878. Only shortly before, he and his pilgrims, returning from the important Marian shrine of Our Lady in 't Zand near Roermond in the southern Dutch province of Limburg, had formed a liturgical procession. Quaedvlieg ha…
