  • Nature-connection and creation care in Australia: Intertwining Indigenous, Christian and holistic spiritualities

Open Access•Cristina Rocha, Joshua Waters et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2026

The lands now commonly known as Australia are religiously and spiritually diverse. Australians have long engaged in spiritual practices which are Indigenous, religious and/or holistic, with significant overlaps among these categories. In this article we focus on Common Grace, a nondenominational Christian group, as an example of spiritual diversity in contemporary Australia. We draw on interviews with Common Grace staff, and textual analysis of a…

  • African diasporas in Australia: Christianity and the complicated matter of trust

Open Access•Cristina Rocha, Kathleen Openshaw•ARTICLE•The Australian Journal of…•2025

Christianity plays a foundational role in many communities in sub‐Saharan Africa. As migrants from the African continent arrive in Australia, the usual roles of religion (i.e., connecting to the spiritual world and strengthening community) become even more pronounced. Churches become trusted support institutions for settlement. Here, we consider the complexities of trust for Christian African migrants as they negotiate settlement in Australia. Fo…

    Open Access•Manuela Ferreira, Roseli Nazario et al.•ARTICLE•Educação e Pesquisa•2025•References: 7

Understanding education as a universally recognised right and a public good makes it relevant to explore its relation to children under the age of 3 in democratic Portugal and to debate the roles attributed to day-care centres, considering the interdependence between care and education. Grounded in the fields of educational sciences and the sociologies of childhood, family, and education, the aim of this study is to achieve these objectives by an…

  • Cristianismo Descolado: O Complexo Industrial Da Moda-Celebridade-Megaigrejas

    Open Access•Cristina Rocha•ARTICLE•Debates do NER•2024•Cited by: 1

Argument…

  • Cool Christianity: Hillsong and the Fashioning of Cosmopolitan Identities

    Cristina Rocha•BOOK•Cool Christianity•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 44

When did Christianity become cool? How did an Australian church conquer the world and expanded into Brazil, a country with its own crop of powerful megachurches? In her exciting new book, anthropologist Cristina Rocha analyzes the creation of a transnational Pentecostal field between Brazil and Australia, two countries that have been peripheral in the history of Pentecostalism but which more recently have been at the forefront of new forms of glo…

  • Body as Evidence of Truth: Biomedicine and Enduring Narratives of Religious and Spiritual Healing

Alexandra Roginski, Cristina Rocha•ARTICLE•Journal for the Academic Study of…•2022

Practitioners of alternative medicine and spirituality often highlight narratives of healing as evidence for the superiority of their modalities over Western biomedicine. We argue that this form of establishing and defending truth has a long history, and base this analysis on the historical and anthropological study of two periods: the late nineteenth century, when alternative theories about relations of mind, body and spirit flourished against a…

  • Buddhism in the Far North of Australia pre-WWII: (In)visibility, Post-colonialism and Materiality

Open Access•A Halafoff, Kim Lam et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Buddhism•2022

Buddhism was first established in Australia through flows of migrants in the mid-nineteenth century, and is currently Australia’s fourth-largest religion. Yet Buddhists have received significantly less scholarly attention than Christians, Jews and Muslims in Australia. Previous research conducted on Buddhism in Australia has also largely centered on the southern states, and on white Buddhists. This article shares findings of archival research on …

Introduction to the JGB Special Focus section, "Flows and Counterflows of Buddhism ‘South of the West’: Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaiʻi." In this special issue, we endeavour to explore horizontal flows and counter flows of Buddhism on ‘paths less travelled’ across the Pacific sea of islands, and ‘South of the West’ (Gibson 1992) rather than the usual ‘from Asia to Europe and the Americas’ story. As such, this special issue fits within the mor…

  • Middle-class’ Africans in Australia: Choosing Hillsong as a global home

    Open Access•Cristina Rocha, Kathleen Openshaw et al.•ARTICLE•Culture and Religion•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 17

Much of the literature on Pentecostal-charismatic Christianity (Pc/C) and African diasporas in the Global North has focused upon African-Majority or -Initiated churches that are either branches of African churches or were created in the diaspora. This focus often frames the appeal of Pc/C to African migrants in terms of: a) its emphasis upon the ‘Prosperity Gospel’ offering a path not only to salvation, but also to earthly riches; b) its opportun…

  • Cool Christianity: The Fashion-Celebrity-Megachurch Industrial Complex

    Open Access•Cristina Rocha•ARTICLE•Material Religion•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 25

In this article, I analyze the ways in which fashion, megachurches, and celebrity and youth cultures coalesce in the 21st century, giving rise to the phenomenon of “Cool Christianity.” I contend that this repackaged Christianity, directed at the middle-class Millennials and Generation Z, is created not only by megachurches in a bid to attract new generations, as it is usually argued. It is also produced by celebrities, the fashion industry, and y…

This article explores the infrastructures that allow the Australian Pentecostal megachurch Hillsong to expand into Brazil. Hillsong is a global religious phenomenon: it has branches in global cities, celebrities among its followers, and an award-winning worship band. Drawing on five years of multi-sited ethnography in Australia and Brazil, I analyse significant infrastructures - smart church buildings, hip soundscapes, and digital media - that en…

  • Materiality and Global Spiritual Networks: Old and new sacred places and objects

    Open Access•Cristina Rocha•ARTICLE•The Australian Journal of…•2020

In this article, I am interested in how belief and religious materiality—sacred objects, places, infrastructures and digital media—are entangled in globalisation processes. Drawing on a case study of the John of God spiritual movement, I analyse the ways in which places and objects that have recently acquired sacred status enter into older, more established global spiritual networks, and by doing so are able to travel and ‘settle’ elsewhere. I ar…

In addition, they are at the mercy of constant changes in Australian migration policy. Drawing on three years …

  • Flows into the Global North: Building a Transnational Spiritual Community

    Cristina Rocha•CHAPTER•John of God•2017

Chapter 6 examines the transnationalization of the John of God movement, focusing particularly on the ways it puts down roots in the West. It argues that, in a seeming paradox, the John of God movement is able to grow outside Brazil because there is a strong pull in the opposite direction—toward Abadiânia. Because followers come to regard the Casa as their “spiritual home,” they work on ways of keeping their transnational connection to the Casa w…

This paper explores migration stories and examines the ways migrants use their gardens as sites of cultural practice in the Fairfield municipality of Western Sydney, one of the most ethnically diverse regions in Australia. We argue that many of those from diverse cultural backgrounds use their gardens in ways very different from the stereotypical conceptions of Australian suburbia. Far from being idyllic places of retreat and repose separate from…

For these followers, it was their first point of contact with Buddhism. …

    Cristina Rocha•CHAPTER•Diaspora of Brazilian Religions•2013

In this chapter the author analyzes the transnationalization of the John of God movement. The author argues that the intense flows of people, sacred objects, ideas, practices and ‘spirits’ between the Casa de Dom Inacio and Australia create a transnational spiritual community comprised of healers, the ill, those who seek spiritual growth, and tour guides. The chapter calls for the expansion of its scope to encompass other transnational communitie…

Capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian dance-cum-martial art, has acquired a worldwide popularity. In this paper, we explore the relationships established by Australian students and Brazilian masters of Capoeira. We draw on and extend Wise and Velayutham's notion of everyday multiculturalism. This concept points to the need to research informal vernacular intercultural negotiations that happen at an everyday level. However, we wish to drill down beneath th…

    Cristina Rocha•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural Studies•2014•References: 27

This article considers the place of Australia within the network of sites through which Japanese Brazilian migrants move. In doing so, it aims to demonstrate the importance of moving beyond a bi-focal analysis of transnationalism to one which encompasses a multiplicity of sites and migrants’ diverse strategies to cross these national borders. Here I analyse the triangular circulation of young middle-class Japanese Brazilians and the establishment…

Nevertheless, there has been a paucity of research on the topic, and the region seldom features in the scholarship on global Buddhism. Drawing on the extant scholarly work, government statistics, and Internet sites of Buddhist institutions, this chapter…
