War, Technology, Anthropology
Technologies of the allied warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan, such as remote-controlled drones and night vision goggles, allow the user to “virtualize” human targets. This coincides with increased civilian casualties and a perpetuation of the very insecurity these technologies are meant to combat. This concise volume of research and reflections from different regions across Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa, observes how anthropology…
Counterinsurgency
This entry defines counterinsurgency; identifies its basic theory, strategy, and flaws; and outlines its relationship with the discipline of anthropology through two eras—first, the Vietnam War and its aftermath and, second, the contemporary US ‐led “war on terrorism” following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001
Too dangerous for fieldwork? The challenge of institutional risk-management in primary research on conflict, violence and ‘Terrorism’
Research on conflict and ‘terrorism’ is confronted by an expanding range of daunting ethical, methodological, and institutional challenges. One of these is the increasing involvement of university ethics and fieldwork safety committees in ‘managing’ researcher safety and security as an issue which requires institutional oversight, control, and approval. This paper contributes to contemporary reflection on and conversations about social sciences f…

Managing Danger in Fieldwork with Perpetrators of Political Violence and State Terror
The ethnography of state terror is "high risk" research and there are real personal dangers for anyone who conducts fieldwork on this issue. Managing such dangers has particularly become an issue for those conducting primary research with perpetrators of state terror-the "rank and file" who apply the electric cattle prods and pull the triggers-and all of the researchers I know who have taken this path have been threatened in one form or another. …

Curiouser and Curiouser
In 2005, in an article in Military Review titled "Anthropology and Counterinsurgency: The Strange Story of their Curious Relationship," Dr. Montgomery McFate launched a serious academic assault on the anthropological tradition of noninvolvement in mission-related military and counterinsurgency research. Dr. McFate was then instrumental in the establishment of the Human Terrain System in 2006, which has "embedded" social scientists with front-line…
In the Shadow of the Gun
Despite over fifteen years of 'peace process,' political violence in Northern Ireland has continued and a situation characterised as 'not-war-not peace' has prevailed. In the euphoria surrounding the establishment of the 'power-sharing government' in 2007, the media reported this event as representing the end of the 'troubles' or conflict. However, significant political violence has continued throughout the peace process and the heavily armed Loy…

Peace process images, symbols and murals in Northern Ireland
Domination, Resistance and Political Culture in Northern Ireland's Catholic-Nationalist Ghettos

Participant Observation in Violent Social Contexts
This paper addresses an area largely neglected in the literature on research methods and the experience of fieldwork in anthropology-namely, the methodological and subjective issue of the dangers anthropologists face while in the field. It begins with a brief review of the literature on methods with reference to this issue, and a discussion of some factors that have contributed to the fact that certain problems of physical safety for fieldworkers…
Living on their nerves
Divis Flats was a high-rise public housing project on the Falls Road in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was frequently described as the worst ghetto in Western Europe, and was widely reputed to be a political hotbed, an Irish Republican Army stronghold, and one of the most violent housing estates in the United Kingdom. The complex exhibited some of the worst manifestations of Northern Ireland's considerable political, economic, social, health, and …
