The project „Archiwum Filomatów – edycja cyfrowa”, prepared by the researchers of the Catholic University of Lublin, aims to represent online the manuscripts of the so-called Archive of Philomaths, which includes this organisation’s documentation and correspondence: letters exchanged by the members of this Vilnius union during the years of its existence (1817-1823). Nowadays, documents are stored in Lublin, Warsaw, and Vilnius libraries. This art…
Mykolo Miežinio žodyno rankraštis Vilniaus universiteto bibliotekoje
This article successfully identifies the manuscript, which currently is in the Manuscript Division of the Vilnius University Library and previously had been mistakenly ascribed to another author, as the draft of Mykolas Miežinis’s (1827–1888) quadrilingual Dictionary. To perform this task, it explores the history of assembling and editing the Dictionary and the structure of the handwritten text. Though Miežinis’ dictionary was far from perfection…
An Update of the Paper, ‘On known and less known relations of Leonhard Euler with Poland’ (DOI
In this note we publish a short letter from Leonhard Euler’s son, Johann Albrecht Euler, the Secretary of the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg, to Marcin Poczobutt-Odlanicki, the Vilnius astronomer. The fate of this letter seemed unknown, but we know its content now. The main news in this correspondence was the discovery of a comet by the astronomer Anders Johan Lexell
Code-Switching in the Letters of Vilnius University Professors at the End of the 18th century
In order to show how research on historical epistolary language can contribute to sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, the present article examines some examples of late 18th-century letters. The research sample includes letters written to Vilnius University professors in that period (now archived in the Vilnius University Library), where the authors of the letters use code-switching or write in a language other than what we would nowadays t…
Lietuvių draugijų veiklos atspindžiai Vytauto Civinskio (1887–1910) Dienoraštyje
ACTIVITY OF THE LITHUANIAN SOCIETIES IN THE DIARY (1904 – 1910) OF VYTAUTAS CIVINSKIS The egodocuments (letters and diaries) provide historians and linguists with the rare opportunity to observe the everyday life of generations, who lived long ago. The Diary of Vytautas Civinskis (1887–1910), a young nobleman, tells about the years he spent abroad while studying in Leipzig, Berlin, and Dorpat in the first years of the 20th century. Along with oth…
The verbalization of emotions in the discourse of a multilingual speaker. A case study
The article aims to discuss the verbalisation of emotions in the discourse of a multilingual person. First, an overview of linguistic investigation in the field of emotions is presented. Notably, linguistic expression of feelings in every given language sometimes lacks precision; moreover, the names of emotions in various languages do not correspond. This poses some problems for multilinguals who try to express their emotions in L2. Later, the pa…
