    본 논문은 신학적 인간론에 대한 에드워즈와 칼빈의 사상의 직접 비교를 통하여, 에드워즈가 개혁신학을 계승하면서도 자신만의 신학사상을 어떤 식으로 발전시켰는지를 고찰한다. “성향”에 대한 에드워즈의 독창적인 개념은 그의 신학적 인간론의 바탕이 된다. 에드워즈에게 있어서 인간은 “성향적” 존재이다. 하나님의 형상으로 창조된 인간은 하나님으로부터 “거룩한 성향”을 부여 받았는데, 이 성향은 하나님의 존재론적 신성과 거룩성 뿐만 아니라, 하나님의 의지와 지성을 반영한다. 에드워드에게서 타락이란 거룩한 성향의 상실을 의미하며, 중생은 그 성향의 회복을 뜻한다. 에드워즈에 따르면, 거룩한 성향을 다시 회복한 중생자들은 중생의 가시적 징표로서의 성화된 삶을 살아야 한다고 주장한다. 에드워즈는 칼빈이 주장한 점진적이며 평생토록 계속되는 중생과 성화에 대한 이해를 받아들이면서도, 중생은 “즉각적”으로 일어나는 …
