The contemporary uses of the 'values of the Republic' in the French naturalisation process
The state promotion of ‘common values’ in public discourses and policies as a response to a so-called ‘crisis of immigrant integration’ has become a widespread phenomenon in contemporary European societies. This article analyses how shared values are promoted by the French state in the implementation of migration policies, and whether such promotion introduces anything new in the approach to immigrant integration. Our analysis concentrates on the…

Citizenship revocation: A Stress Test for Liberal Democracy
On the basis of the case studies collected in this special issue, the paper analyses what is philosophically at stake in public discourses and policies about citizenship revocation, and why the latter currently acts as a borderline case with regard to liberal democracy. Firstly, we ask whether, beyond an intensification of internal tensions, the destabilizing effects attached to the revival of citizenship revocation conjure up dilemmas which impl…
Communitarian equality: To Each According to Their Contribution to the Group Identity
Rooted in a contemporary political reality marked by anxieties over identity within culturally dominant groups, this study seeks to interrogate what happens to equality, a principle of justice generally placed at the forefront in liberal democracies, when it becomes subordinate to the preservation of the majority identity. Communitarian conceptions of equality and justice are examined through analysis of the critiques of political liberalism - an…
