A World of Populations
Demographic study and the idea of a “population” was developed and modified over the course of the twentieth century, mirroring the political, social, and cultural situations and aspirations of different societies. This growing field adapted itself to specific policy concerns and was therefore never apolitical, despite the protestations of practitioners that demography was “natural.” Demographics were transformed into public policies that shaped …

Anita Casavantes Bradford. The Revolution Is for the Children
Anita Casavantes Bradford begins her book about Cubans with a reference to Philippe Ariès's Centuries of Childhood, a now classic study that revolutionized our perspective on childhood and has inspired countless other scholars to explore the roots and transformation of the concept of childhood ever since its publication in 1962. It questions whether all citizens of a nation are equally empowered by current paradigms of progress and modernization; and it shows that changing constructions of class, ethnicity, a…
Forging Feminisms under Dictatorship
Focusing on the period of dictatorship, this analysis explores Chilean feminists’ empowerment through international ties when feminism gained legitimacy as a vehicle for social change in the aftermath of the United Nations International Women’s Year in 1975. Centering on three types of encounters that marked women’s coalition‐building and their international ties, both personal empowerment and institutional change in defense of women’s rights are…

Militant Motherhood Re‐Visited
This article addresses the immediate and long‐term implications of militant motherhood in the Latin American Southern Cone. It contributes a new perspective to the now sizable literature on women's resistance and political participation by comparing militant motherhood under leaderships on opposite sides of the political spectrum. Mothers’ mobilization could, but did not, by definition, focus on gender equity or feminist goals. Anti‐Allende women…
