  • Revolution, Modernization and the Paradox of Twentieth-Century Russia

    Robert V Daniels•ARTICLE•Canadian Slavonic Papers•2000

ARTICLES A key challenge faced by historians of the 1990s all over the world has been to explain the collapse of the Soviet Union and Communist rule in Russia. But more fundamental question, less often addressed, is the real nature of the Soviet system that was finally swept away. Understanding the convulsions of the recent past demands reconsideration of the tumultuous history of the entire century. The astonishing events of 1991 have implanted …

Whether at the level of detailed narrative or the broadest explanation, Carl Becker and a host of other well-known historians have warned, it rests on the imaginative conceptualizing of events by the individual historian or tradition.' Soviet historians, roaming the wide range of speculation that glasnost has opened to them, are trying to exorcise the terrible memory of Stalinism by exploring the might-have-beens, the alternative policies and lines of development that the Soviet Union might have chosen at the critical turning point a decade after the revolution. Articles and conferences one after another on this period have been focusing on "alternatives" or "the Choice of Path…

Political has emerged in the past few years as one of the most widely invoked concepts in the interpretation of Soviet affairs. The concept offers a salutary contribution to the balanced understanding of the character of the Soviet system and its behavior. Generalities about Russian tradition and national character, however, are not enough to demonstrate how the cultural legacy of the remote past may continue to affect the politics of the present…
