  • Facial Recognition Technology, Surveillance, and the Transformations of the Crowd in the Sports Stadium

    Open Access•Alexis Tadié•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2026

Facial recognition technology and other forms of surveillance are now ubiquitous in sports stadiums. These technologies not only affect individual privacy and anonymity but also fundamentally transform the nature of the crowd itself. Their deployment is often the consequence of past acts of violence at stadiums or of the perceived threat of future disorder. While legal concerns surrounding the use of such technologies—particularly in sports stadi…

  • Knowledge and the Picturesque

    Open Access•Alexis Tadié•ARTICLE•Journal for Eighteenth-Century…•2023

This essay looks at the West's engagement with Syria in the eighteenth century, through the writings of travellers and through the history of the publications they brought back from their travels. It argues that these publications provoked a rethinking of various tropes in the description of the Levant, helping to define attitudes to ruins as well as providing a model for thinking about the customs of the inhabitants of that part of the world. It…

  • Quarrelling

    Alexis Tadié•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Eighteenth-Centu…•2019

This chapters looks at satire in the context of quarrelling. While a number of satires originate in quarrels, they can also become interventions in ongoing disputes, to the point of ending them. This chapter does not attempt to provide a historical overview of the numerous quarrels in which satires were involved, nor does it examine the infinite variety of satirical texts involved in quarrels: lampoons, libels, etc. Rather, this chapter attempts …

  • Sporting Cultures, 1650–1850

Simon Bainbridge, Supriya Chaudhuri et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Sporting Cultures, 1650-1850•2018

In the eighteenth century sport as we know it emerged as a definable social activity. Hunting and other country sports became the source of significant innovations in visual art; racing and boxing generated important subcultures; and sport's impact on good health permeated medical, historical, and philosophical writings. Sporting Cultures, 1650-1850 is a collection of essays that charts important developments in the study of sport in the eighteen…

  • The Art(s) of Boxing

Alexis Tadié•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2018

Boxing and the arts have a long and intertwined history. In depictions of sport in literature and the visual arts, boxing has played central role. Boxing has served to enable the development of literary and artistic concerns. Boxing has been an especially fruitful subject in cinema, and different cinematic genres have appropriated the sport in order to develop their insights, in particular comedy and film noir. Rather than considering boxing film…

  • The Arts of Competitive Tennis

Alexis Tadié•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2017

This essay analyses the uses of competitive tennis in literature and the arts. While analyses have mainly focused on the social dimension of tennis, not enough attention has been paid to tennis as a competitive sport. In order to fill this gap, this essay offers an analysis of the competitive dimension of tennis. It looks first at the different social issues that may arise from a consideration of the sport from this angle, in particular race and …

  • The Language of Quarrels

    Open Access•Alexis Tadié•ARTICLE•Paragraph•2017•Cited by: 1

This essay proposes to analyse the mechanisms of quarrels from a theoretical perspective largely informed by linguistics, and more specifically, by pragmatics. It connects with some of Jean-Jacques Lecercle's argument in the current issue, but takes the analysis in different directions. Looking at a number of examples of quarrels, this paper purports to identify the different participants and parameters in the development of a quarrel. These incl…

  • The Seductions of Modern Tennis

    Alexis Tadié•ARTICLE•Sport in History•2015

This article investigates the cultural articulations between real and lawn tennis, starting from the invention of the game of lawn tennis in the late nineteenth century and looking at the negotiations which surrounded its birth. It analyses the seductions of the game through a focus on art and discourses around the game, in particular literary discourse. The first part analyses the ‘invention’ of the game and in particular the components of the s…

  • Running for Freedom

    Alexis Tadié•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2014•References: 1

This essay analyses the uses of running in contemporary fiction. It addresses the question of the literariness of running, and the ways in which literature enables us to articulate aspects of the sport such as its heroism or its relationship to the nation. It looks at a number of fictional texts, and focuses largely on two important works, ‘The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner’, Sillitoe's celebrated novella of 1958, and Jean Echenoz's nove…

  • The networks of quarrels

  • Heroes, Fans and the Nation

    Alexis Tadié•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2012•References: 3

This paper argues that the football trope in literary fiction enables the writer to explore the workings of modernity. In doing so, writers define a place for the reader, which is parallel to the spectator's at a football match. If football may be seen as a form central to our thinking about modernity, the decentring of the analysis brings to light different, splintered, modernities. This study concentrates on English football, as well as on the …

  • The Fictions of (English) Cricket

    Alexis Tadié•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 4

This paper examines the fictional representations of cricket and argues that they contribute to a definition of the game. It examines the fictions of cricket, showing that they construct the game into a most distinct English fiction. Literary treatment of cricket must further be read in the context of the transformations of the game in the nineteenth century, with the rise of athleticism as an ideology, and its role in the training of the colonia…

    Open Access•Alexis Tadié•ARTICLE•Études Épistémè•2006•Cited by: 1
