  • Designing a New Architecture for the U.S. National Accounts

    Open Access•D W Jorgenson•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2010•References: 8

The key elements of a new architecture for the U.S. national accounts have been developed in a prototype system constructed by Dale W. Jorgenson and J. Steven Landefeld, director of the Bureau of Economic Analysis at the U.S. Department of Commerce. As the U.S. economy emerges from the most severe contraction since the Second World War, the focus of policy will shift toward enhancing the economy’s potential for growth. A second motivation for the…

  • A Retrospective Look at the U.S. Productivity Growth Resurgence

    Open Access•D W Jorgenson, Mun S Ho et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2008

It is widely recognized that information technology was critical to the dramatic acceleration of U.S. labor productivity growth in the mid 1990s. This paper traces the evolution of productivity estimates to document how and when this perception emerged. Early studies concluded that information technology was relatively unimportant. Only after the massive information technology investment boom of the late 1990s did this investment and underlying p…

  • Information Technology and the U.S. Economy

    D W Jorgenson•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2001

The resurgence of the American economy since 1995 has outrun all but the most optimistic expectations. Economic forecasting models have been seriously off track and growth projections have been revised to reflect a more sanguine outlook only recently. It is not surprising that the unusual combination of more rapid growth and slower inflation in the 1990's has touched off a strenuous debate among economists about whether improvements in America's …

  • Raising the Speed Limit: U.S. Economic Growth in the Information Age

    D W Jorgenson, Kevin J Stiroh•ARTICLE•Brookings Papers on Economic…•2000

This paper examines the underpinnings of the successful performance of the US economy in the late 1990s. Relative to the early 1990s, output growth has accelerated by nearly two percentage points. We attribute this to rapid capital accumulation, a surge in hours worked, and faster growth of total factor productivity. The acceleration of productivity growth, driven by information technology, is the most remarkable feature of the US growth resurgen…

  • Econometrics: Econometric Modeling of Producer Behavior

    D W Jorgenson•BOOK•Econometrics•2000

New methodology for econometricians, based on the dual formulation of the theory of production in terms of prices. The objectives of econometric modeling of producer behavior are to determine the nature of substitution among inputs and outputs and of differences in technology, as well as the role of economies of scale in production. Recent advances in methodology, based on the dual formulation of the theory of production in terms of prices, have e…

  • Consumer Prices, the Consumer Price Index, and the Cost of Living

    Open Access•Michael J Boskin, Ellen R Dulberger et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•1998

After presenting major findings and recommendations, the CPI Commission reiterates the estimate of a 1.1 percentage point per annum upward bias. It rejects the contention that the BLS already makes substantial corrections for quality change; that quality improvements and new products accrue only to the rich; and that procedures to make more extensive quality adjustments, valuations of new products, and adjustments for commodity and outlet substit…

  • Did We Lose the War on Poverty

    Open Access•D W Jorgenson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•1998•Cited by: 4

Official U.S. poverty statistics based on household income imply that the proportion of the U.S. population below the poverty level reached a minimum in 1973, giving rise to the widespread impression that the elimination of poverty is impossible. By contrast, poverty estimates based on household consumption have fallen through 1989 and imply that the war on poverty was a success. This paper recommends replacing income by consumption in official e…

  • Environmental Regulation and U.S. Economic Growth

    Open Access•D W Jorgenson, Peter J Wilcoxen•ARTICLE•The RAND Journal of Economics•1990

In this article we quantify the costs of pollution controls by reporting the results of simulations of the growth of the U.S. economy with and without regulation. For this purpose, we have constructed a detailed model of the economy that includes the determinants of long-term growth. We have also analyzed the interaction between industries in order to capture the full repercussions of environmental regulations. However, we have not attempted to a…

  • Tax Reform and U.S. Economic Growth

    D W Jorgenson, Kun-Young Yun et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1990•Cited by: 3•References: 1

In this paper we evaluate the impact of the Tax Reform Act of 1986 on U.S. economic growth. We first calculate effective tax rates on income from capital employed in corporate, noncorporate, and household sectors. We then project the future growth of the U.S. economy with and without the 1986 tax reform. We find that much of the potential gain in welfare was dissipated through failure to index the income tax base for inflation. The most promising…

    Open Access•D W Jorgenson, Barbara M Fraumeni•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•1989•Cited by: 8•References: 16

The purpose of this paper is to present new measures of the benefits from education. These measures are based on the incremental effect on human wealth of participation in formal schooling. We define human wealth as the sum of lifetime labor incomes for all individuals in the U.S. population. These incomes include the value of time spent working and the value of nonmarket labor activities, which are defined to include parenting and the enjoyment …

  • Two-Stage Budgeting and Exact Aggregation

    D W Jorgenson, Daniel T Slesnick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•1988

This paper presents an econometric model of demand for energy based on two-stage budgeting. The model provides own-price and cross-price elasticities of demand for energy and nonenergy commodities for the United States. These elasticities are estimated separately for households classified by family size, age of head, region, race, and urban versus rural residence. Price elasticities are presented conditional on total energy expenditure and total …

  • Productivity and Postwar U.S. Economic Growth

    Open Access•D W Jorgenson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•1988

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the sources of postwar U.S. economic growth. The findings presented here allocate more than three-fourths of U.S. economic growth during the period 1948-1979 to growth of capital and labor inputs and less than one-fourth to productivity growth. To provide additional insight into the sources of U.S. economic growth, this paper then analyzes the sources of growth for individual industrial sectors. The final o…

This article presents estimates of household equivalence scales, broken down by demographic characteristics, of U.S. households. Separate estimates are given by family size, age of head, region, race, and urban versus rural residence. Commodity-specific scales are presented for five separate commodity groups—energy, food, consumer goods, capital services, and other services. The estimates are obtained from an econometric model of aggregate consum…
