  • Extraction asymmetries show that type A coordination is adjunction

Open Access•Ad Neeleman, Mizuho Tanaka et al.•ARTICLE•Language•2024

Ross (1967) observed that the coordinate structure constraint can be violated in certain semantically asymmetric structures. In this article we consider one of these structures, namely type A coordination, in detail (the terminology is from Lakoff 1986; an example is Here's the whisky I went to the store and bought ). We present experimental evidence showing that the pattern of argument and adjunct extraction from type A coordinate structures mat…

  • Subordination and binary branching

Open Access•Ad Neeleman, Jestine Philip et al.•ARTICLE•Syntax•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 57

Syntactic representations are overwhelmingly asymmetric and binary branching. We develop an account of this based on the notion that subordination must be licensed through the discharge of a unique selectional requirement. The resulting theory predicts that symmetric structures, if they exist, will allown-ary branching. We argue that this prediction is borne out. (i) Core properties of coordination can be explained if coordinate structures are sy…

  • Similarities and Differences between Quantifier Raising and Wh Movement Out of Adjuncts

    Open Access•Mizuho Tanaka, Misako Tanaka•ARTICLE•Syntax•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 26

This article reports a set of experimental studies that support the following set of conclusions: (i) quantifier raising is sensitive to adjunct islands, (ii) wh movement is sensitive to adjunct islands, but (iii) quantifier raising and wh movement are not sensitive to adjunct islands in the same way. The experiments examined quantifier raising and wh-argument extraction from three types of nontensed adjuncts: bare participial gerunds, after prep…

  • Change in Sleep State of the Elderly before and after Cataract Surgery

Open Access•Mizuho Tanaka, Kyoko Hosoe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of PHYSIOLOGICAL…•2010

It seems likely that the influences of light upon circadian rhythms will decrease with aging, particularly those rhythms that are more influenced by light with a higher color temperature and richer in short wavelengths. More specifically, cataract patients' optical systems transmit light poorly, especially the shorter wavelengths that affect the circadian system more. The present study investigated melatonin secretion profiles and sleep patterns …
