  • John Paget of Amsterdam

    Open Access•Keith L Sprunger, Mary S Sprunger•ARTICLE•Church History•2024•References: 10

John Paget (c. 1574-1638), head pastor of the English Reformed Church of Amsterdam from 1607-1637, helped to shape the future of Presbyterianism. Exiled from England for nonconformity, Paget embraced the cosmopolitanism and religious toleration of his new city, studying Hebrew and Arabic in a multicultural circle of scholars. When the plague struck Amsterdam, he preached sermons on death and visited members in infected homes. When it came to Prot…

  • Puritan Church Architecture and Worship in a Dutch Context

    Open Access•Keith L Sprunger•ARTICLE•Church History•1997•References: 5

English Puritans have only a small reputation for aesthetic contributions to architecture. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, they worshiped God without making a show of buildings or beautiful ceremonies; consequently, there are few grand Puritan architectural monuments. Nonseparating Puritans, blending into the larger church, put their emphasis on the pure preaching and practice of biblical religion, not on outward appearances. And the …

  • Trumpets from the Tower

    Keith L Sprunger•BOOK•Trumpets from the Tower•1994

This volume deals with English Puritan book printing and publishing in the Netherlands, especially in the cities of Amsterdam and Leiden, in the early seventeenth century. Because of censorship in England, many Puritans had to go abroad to have their books printed. Once produced by Dutch presses, the books were shipped, or smuggled, back to England. The book centers on a body of about 350 Puritanical books, mostly in the English language, printed…

  • English and Dutch Sabbatarianism and the Development of Puritan Social Theology (1600-1660)

    Open Access•Keith L Sprunger•ARTICLE•Church History•1982•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Strict observance of the Lord's Day became a distinctive feature of English and Scottish society in the seventeenth century. The Sabbatarian principle touched not only British religion but many social and economic practices as well. At some times, English Puritan settlers in the Netherlands attempted to introduce their brand of Sabbatarianism into Dutch society but with disappointing results. The success or failure of Sabbatarianism often has bee…

Keith L Sprunger•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•1968•Cited by: 1

Puritans, well aware that they served a God, also created a precise theology; nothing seemed to them so disastrous as a haphazard theology. Behind the great rows of Puritan treatises of theology, sermons, and other useful books on religion lay a pattern of theology which guided the scholars on their way. To know exactly what theology is and what it is not was the beginning of good theology. All knowledge, emanating as it did from the mind of God,…

  • Ames, Ramus, and the Method of Puritan Theology

    Open Access•Keith L Sprunger•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•1966

Theology, as many Puritans saw it, was a combination of sound doctrine, practical exhortation, and precise method. The Marrow of Sacred Divinity by William Ames, a great favorite in many seventeenth-century Puritan homes, owed much of its reputation to a blend of these ingredients of doctrine, practical divinity, and method. Although Puritan theologians wrote few systematic theologies except for creeds and catechisms, the Marrow is one example of…

  • William Ames and the Settlement of Massachusetts Bay

    Keith L Sprunger•ARTICLE•The New England Quarterly•1966

A MONG the stars which sparkled in Cotton Mather's firmament of New England history was William Ames, a man who never set foot in the New World. To the New England Puritans, was profound, that sublime, that subtil, that irrefragable,-yea, that angelical doctor; and even Cotton Mather had to tax his vocabulary to picture with suitable superlatives.' Although never settled in America, his name was an integral part of the events which shaped the fir…

  • Other Pilgrims in Leiden

    Open Access•Keith L Sprunger•ARTICLE•Church History•1972

When the citizens of seventeenth-century Leiden spoke of "the English church here," they referred in most cases to the English Reformed Church, not to the historically-famous church of the Pilgrim Fathers. In the first decades of the seventeenth century, the Dutch city of Leiden included a sizable English and Scottish community, but one divided into two distinct religious factions, namely the Separatist Pilgrims and the non-separating Reformed Ch…

The seventeenth-century Netherlands was the Puritan refuge. Its easy accessibility for radical English Puritans caused many a mishap in the plans of the bishops as they enforced conformity in England. When the going became too rough at home, nonconforming ministers could jump across to Holland, rather than obediently submit to discipline, and there carry on their defiant ways. Especially in the 1620s and 1630s, William Laud and others of the Engl…
