  • Historicizing a Dream of Complete Science

Nasser Zakariya•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•2024

This paper attempts an historical analysis of a dream of the physicist George Gamow recorded shortly before his death in 1968. The dream is contextualized through Gamow's extended scientific work and popular scientific efforts, and in light of enduring preoccupations with the notion of a complete science. The analysis extends to an examination of the relationship of the dream to dreaming practices and deliberations apart from Gamow's, as evident …

  • Evolutionary antagonisms and the progress of three categories of traits

    Open Access•Nasser Zakariya•ARTICLE•BJHS Themes•2021

Darwin in The Descent of Man deliberates over the question of progress in relation to three categories of traits – aesthetic, moral and intellectual – attending to their interplay. The later formulations of Thomas Henry Huxley and Alfred Russel Wallace shift and reframe the terms for weighing together progress and the relationship across these traits, downplaying the role of aesthetic assessments. Huxley and Wallace invoke ‘antagonisms’ counterin…

  • Beyond the data treadmill

Open Access•Nicholas Shapiro, Nasser Zakariya et al.•CHAPTER•Toxic Truths•2020

This chapter resituates discussions of community-based science beyond the emancipatory rhetoric of democratization, creative commons, and the blurring of the bulwarks of expertise to include consideration of the potentially constrictive instrumentalist scientific idiom produced by and through these practices. This chapter asks: what are the approaches to apprehending the environment that might not so easily boil down to binaries of benevolence or…

In this paper we resituate discussions of community-based science beyond the emancipatory rhetoric of democratization, creative commons, and the blurring of the bulwarks of expertise to include consideration of the potentially constrictive instrumentalist scientific idiom produced by and through these practices. Collectively, we apply four interrelated insights already available within STS literature to the chemical ecologies that we are immersed…

  • Exhibiting Cosmos

    Nasser Zakariya•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•2015

A Spacetime Odyssey are inevitably refracted through its 1980 predecessor, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, also of thirteen parts. 1 Not only does the first series still possess an enduring life in popular culture, with astronomer and popularizer Carl Sagan a lasting, if now less prominent, icon, but the new series itself explicitly invokes its forerunner. In 1980, the "scientific epic" or "cosmic evolution" projected in the first series was less widel…

  • Poetics of Brotherhood

    Open Access•Ilya Kliger, Nasser Zakariya•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In this article, Ilya Kliger and Nasser Zakariya treat Lev Tolstoi's conception of brotherhood from a narratological perspective. In the process, they trace the outlines of late Tolstoian narrative poetics, situating it within a variegated landscape of Tolstoi's own more properly "realist" literary practice, and offering broader suggestions on the workings of narrative in its capacity to model social relations and ethical action. A narratological…

  • Organic and Mechanistic Time and the Limits of Narrative

Ilya Kliger, Nasser Zakariya•ARTICLE•Configurations•2007•Cited by: 1

This essay examines the narratalogical presuppositions of organic and mechanistic accounts of the world. If our hypothesis about the respective alliances between organic and mechanistic explanatory modes on the one hand and the narrative poles of sjuzhet and fabula on the other is correct, and if it is true, moreover, that narrative is necessarily constituted in the field of tension between these two narrative poles, then it is no wonder that nat…
