  • Measuring the Master Adaptive Learner

Sally A Santen, Adam Funk et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2026

PURPOSE: The Master Adaptive Learner (MAL) is a model describing the collective skills of planning, learning, assessing, and adjusting that may translate into continually improving clinical proficiency. The objective of this study was to develop a MAL assessment instrument to measure these skills. METHOD: 1,427 students completed the 36-item candidate MAL instrument. The authors performed exploratory factor analysis (EFA) on half of the dataset. …

  • How well do workplace‐based assessments support summative entrustment decisions? A multi‐institutional generalisability study

    Open Access•Michael S Ryan, Katherine A Gielissen et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Education•2024

  • Competency-Based Medical Education in a Norm-Referenced World

    Open Access•Michael S Ryan, Kimberly D Lomis et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2023

Competency-based medical education (CBME) requires a criterion-referenced approach to assessment. However, despite best efforts to advance CBME, there remains an implicit, and at times, explicit, demand for norm-referencing, particularly at the junction of undergraduate medical education (UME) and graduate medical education (GME). In this manuscript, the authors perform a root cause analysis to determine the underlying reasons for continued norm-…

  • Revisiting the Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency

    Jonathan M Amiel, Dorothy A Andriole et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2021

The Core EPAs for Entering Residency Pilot project aimed to test the feasibility of implementing 13 entrustable professional activities (EPAs) at 10 U.S. medical schools and to gauge whether the use of the Core EPAs could improve graduates’ performance early in residency. In this manuscript, the authors (members of the pilot institutions and Association of American Medical Colleges staff supporting the project evaluation) describe the schools’ ca…

  • The First 2 Years of Entrustment Decisions in the Core Entrustable Professional Activities (Core EPAs) Pilot

    Delindus R Brown, Jeremy J Moeller et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2021

Purpose: This retrospective study sought to describe (1) progress toward implementation of programmatic assessment in the Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency (Core EPA) pilot and (2) changes in entrustment decision-making outcomes, between initial attempt at entrustment decision making for the graduating class of 2019 and the second entrustment decision-making cycle for the graduating class of 2020. Approach/Methods: F…

  • Exploiting the power of information in medical education

    Open Access•William B Cutrer, W Anderson Spickard et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2021

The explosion of medical information demands a thorough reconsideration of medical education, including what we teach and assess, how we educate, and whom we educate. Physicians of the future will need to be self-aware, self-directed, resource-effective team players who can synthesize and apply summarized information and communicate clearly. Training in metacognition, data science, informatics, and artificial intelligence is needed. Education pro…

  • Vanderbilt University School of Medicine

    William B Cutrer, Donald W Brady et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2020

Medical Education Program Highlights Curriculum 2.0: This is a responsive, agile system of lifelong learning designed to prepare students, through highly personalized education, to adapt and respond to a rapidly evolving health care system. Curriculum 2.0 focuses on how to learn and understand concepts and relations, more than memorizing facts. Innovative, personalized curriculum: Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) offers early clini…

  • The educators’ experience

Lisa Auerbach, Sally A Santen et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2020

BACKGROUND: The Master Adaptive Learner (MAL) theoretical framework describes an integrated approach to learning that combines features of educational theory on self-regulated learning and aspects of quality improvement. In order to develop MAL students, it is important to pay attention to the learning environment. PURPOSE: needed to promote the development of master adaptive learners. METHODS: Thematic analysis of reports by medical educators wh…

  • Fostering the Development of Master Adaptive Learners

    William B Cutrer, Bonnie M Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2017

Change is ubiquitous in health care, making continuous adaptation necessary for clinicians to provide the best possible care to their patients. The authors propose that developing the capabilities of a Master Adaptive Learner will provide future physicians with strategies for learning in the health care environment and for managing change more effectively. The concept of a Master Adaptive Learner describes a metacognitive approach to learning bas…
