  • Hobrecht and His Singers Robert Nosow

    Open Access•Bonnie J Blackburn•ARTICLE•Music and Letters•2023

Robert Nosow’s book on the composer Jacob Obrecht does exactly what it says on the blurb: ‘Hobrecht and His Singers frames the life of the illustrious composer Jacob Hobrecht (Obrecht) within a single institution, the Church of St. Donatian in Bruges’; it also includes ‘a collective biography of the musicians’ at this church. Part I covers the social and economic conditions in the church of St Donatian during the period 1485–1505: the post of suc…

  • The Corruption of One is the Generation of the Other

    Bonnie J Blackburn•ARTICLE•Journal of the Alamire Foundation•2012

The composition of enigmatic canons reached a high point in the last three decades of the fifteenth century; many composers were moved to try their hand at them, but the outstanding exponents were Antoine Busnoys, Jacob Obrecht, and Josquin des Prez. Instead of the straightforward Latin instructions that accompanied canons of the earlier fifteenth century, enigmatic inscriptions became favoured, often taken from the Bible or classical literature.…

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae ... ad te clamamus ... ad te suspiramus': when this lovely Marian antiphon is sung, whether by one person or many, it is intoned on behalf of all mankind. 'Ave sanctissima Maria ... libera me ab omni malo; ora pro peccato meo': when this prayer is said, it is the individual who begs the Virgin's intercession, who pleads for her to free him from evil, who asks her to pray for his sins. Prayers in the first person…

  • On Compositional Process in the Fifteenth Century

    Bonnie J Blackburn•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1987•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The change from "successive composition" to "simultaneous conception" is one of the great turning points in the history of music. The latter term, derived from Pietro Aaron's allusion to the method of composition used by modern composers, does not correctly convey Aaron's meaning. He said that modern composers "take all the parts into consideration at once," disposing them in different ranges and thus allowing the avoidance of awkward clashes bet…

  • Music and festivities at the court of Leo X

    Open Access•Bonnie J Blackburn•ARTICLE•Early Music History•1992

‘On 1 October 1518, Cardinal Cornaro and Cardinal Pisani left Venice for Rome; they went by water to Chioggia, then set out on horseback.’ Thus begins the diary entry of a young Venetian patrician, Marcantonio Michiel, who was himself a member of the travelling party. Twenty-five days later they arrived in Rome, where Michiel was to stay for two years. During this period he noted in his diary both political events in Rome and news from Venice, bu…
