  • Expatriate staffing in foreign subsidiaries and host market contestability

    Open Access•Katja Zajc Kejžar, Tina Golob Šušteršič•ARTICLE•Cross Cultural & Strategic…•2024•References: 2

Purpose This paper aims to study the decision of multinational enterprises (MNEs) whether to employ a host-country (HCN) or a parent-country national (PCN) manager in their subsidiaries, focusing on the role of host market contestability. Design/methodology/approach We develop an empirical model for the probability of appointing a PCN manager in the population of all foreign-owned firms registered in Slovenia over a nine-year period. We combine f…

  • Intellectual property and the organization of the global value chain

Open Access•Stefano Bolatto, Alireza Naghavi et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2023•References: 40

This paper highlights the role of intangible assets in a property rights model of firm organization with sequential production. Empirical evidence based on foreign direct investment and transaction‐level trade data of Slovenian firms reveals that the strength of intellectual property rights (IPR) protection in the supplier's location affects firms' organizational choices whenever supplier investments are sequential complements. In this case, when…

  • Covid ‐19, trade collapse and GVC linkages

Open Access•Katja Zajc Kejžar, Alan Velić et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2022

This paper highlights the role of supply chain linkages for the transmission of COVID‐19‐induced shocks based on the monthly trade of the European Union Member States during the first wave of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Using the framework of the gravity model, we find an overall decline of over 20% in trade among EU countries following the COVID‐19 outbreak. Both supply and demand shocks are shown to contribute to this trade decline associated with C…

  • Firm‐level export duration

    Open Access•Črt Kostevc, Katja Zajc Kejžar•ARTICLE•World Economy•2020

This paper explores the impact of a firm's market‐specific ownership linkages and trade complementarities on different dimensions of its exporting longevity. Unlike previous studies that were mostly based on country‐product‐level data, this paper uses transaction‐level trade data on the population of firms in Slovenia in the 2002–11 period, matched with detailed origin/direction of inward/outward FDI information to determine a firm's integration …

  • The Changing Patterns of China–CEE Trade

Yuhong Shang, Nina Ponikvar et al.•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2016•References: 2

This article examines the contribution of competitiveness and trade product structure to China’s commercial links with ten states located in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). A constant market share analysis for the 2002–2011 period shows that, except for Romania, both CEE states and China increased their market shares in each other’s market mainly due to their improved competitiveness in intermediate goods. However, with the notable exception of…

  • Determinants of Financial Constraints

Open Access•Nina Ponikvar, Katja Zajc Kejžar et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Research-Ekonomska…•2013

Based on the population of Slovenian firms we analyse the impact of the 2008 financial crisis on the firms’ financial constraints. In line with the theoretical predictions firm size, ownership, productivity, and export orientation all impact firm’s financial situation. With the full onset of the crisis in 2009, financial health of the foreign firms worsened more compared to domestic firms, while the availability of financial resources deteriorate…
