You Can Get Pregnant!”: Ghanaian Mother-Daughter Communication About Menstruation
This study explores mother-daughter communication about menstruation within Ghanaian families. Using the theory of memorable messages (Rubinsky & Cooke-Jackson, 2017) as a guiding framework, we conducted one-on-one semi-structured interviews with 30 Ghanaian mothers and daughters. Data were analyzed following Braun and Clarke (2021) six-step thematic analysis. Findings reveal that menstruation is rarely discussed within Ghanaian families. When it…
“I will pray about it”: Mental illness Stigma Management Strategies among Ghanaian Celebrities
The prevalence of mental health issues in Ghanaian celebrity culture has become increasingly concerning, as evidenced by public interviews. Mental health is foundational to human interaction and cognition, yet it remains a neglected area in Ghanaian society. This study, guided by Stigma Management Communication Theory, explored how Ghanaian celebrities navigate the stigma surrounding their mental health disorders. Data were collected via semi-str…

The Emergence of Science in Western Europe
Genius manifests itself in varied ways under varied circumstances. Often a cluster of individuals, working in a limited area in a limited period of time, can bring about great progress in one or another branch of science. Eventually the forward momentum seems to falter, and then leadership passes elsewhere. In this new book, edited by Professor Crosland, each of ten authorities describes the progress in one particular locus during a limited time …

Clerks and Craftsmen in China and the West
Joseph Needham, in addition to his other accomplishments, is the outstanding western scholar in the history of science and technology of China. In this field he has published a mammoth multi-volume text that is the definitive work in its field. While he was devoting most of his time to this major project, he had delivered many lectures and occasional papers on the subjects of Chinese science, technology, and medical history. The present volume co…

The Medical Practitioners in Medieval England: A Biographical Register
Most new books become rapidly outdated. It is indeed refreshing to welcome a new work of tremendous scholarship that will immediately assume a definitive position in the learned world, and will maintain that position for a long time to come. What was medicine like in the Middle Ages? Professors Talbot and Hammond, who began to investigate the problem independently but later joined forces, have published a scholarly and at the same time fascinatin…

What is disease
Biological science does not try to distinguish between health and disease. Biology is concerned with the interaction between living organisms and their environment. What we call health or disease is quite irrelevant. These reactions between the individual and his environment are complex. The individual and his surroundings form an integrated system which we can arbitrarily divide into two parts. There is an “external” component, by which we mean …

"Instinct" as an explanatory concept
Is medicine an Exact Science
It is an interesting paradox that on the one hand intemperate enthusiasm greets new medical discoveries. On the other hand, the lack of science in medicine is paraded from time to time, usually as a matter of apologetics, as, when a physician wishes to excuse an error, a lawyer to discredit a physician, or a jury to render a verdict contrary to medical evidence. Philosophers who insist on the mathematical or quantitative aspects in any definition…
