  • Combining Bayesian Calibration and Copula Models for Age Estimation

Open Access•Andrea Faragalli, Edlira Skrami et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Accurately estimating and predicting chronological age from some anthropometric characteristics of an individual without an identity document can be crucial in the context of a growing number of forced migrants. In the related literature, the prediction of chronological age mostly relies upon the use of a single predictor, which is usually represented by a dental/skeletal maturity index, or multiple independent ordinal predictor (stage of maturat…

  • Age estimation in children based on open apices measurement in the Serbian population

Open Access•Ksenija Zelić, Nemanja Marinković et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2020

Background: Cameriere's method has been tested in many populations and is widely accepted for dental age estimation. Aim: To establish a new formula for age estimation by measurement of open apices of mandibular teeth based on Cameriere's European formula. Subjects and methods: Panoramic radiographs of 333 healthy Serbian children aged 5-14 years were analysed by two independent researchers. The new formula - Belgrade Age Formula (BAF) - was crea…

  • The mass burials from the western necropolis of the Greek colony of Himera (Sicily) related to the battles of 480 and 409 BCE

    Open Access•Viva, Norma Lonoce et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 24

Throughout the ancient Greek, world mass burials are rare. Of the 10,000 excavated burials in the western necropolis of the Greek colony of Himera (649-409), only 16 contained more than one individual; seven of these can in all possibility be traced back to the two battles fought by Himera against the Carthaginians in 480 and 409 BCE. Written sources (Diod. 11.20ff.) state that the Himerans, accompanied by numerous Greek allies, defeated the Cart…

  • Radiological tooth/pulp ratio in canines and individual age estimation in a sample of adult neolithic skeletons from Italy

    Open Access•P F Fabbri, Viva et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 57

OBJECTIVES: The estimation of an individual's age at the time of death is one of the most important components in anthropological studies and is the basis for demographic studies on ancients. However, the different methods commonly used in anthropology for adult age estimation at death provide results with a high level of uncertainty. The consequence is the inability to develop demographic studies with a good degree of reliability. A non-destruct…

  • Twins and the paradox of dental-age estimations

Open Access•Markéta Pechníková, Danilo De Angelis et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2014

  • Mandibular Fracture and Dislocation in a Case Study from the Jewish Cemetery of Lucena (CÓRDOBA), in South Iberian Peninsula (8th–12th ad )

    Open Access•Stefano De Luca, J Viciano et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011•References: 3

The skeletal remains of an adult female have been exhumed in an 11th century tomb in the mediaeval Jewish cemetery of Ronda Sur, in the city of Lucena (Córdoba, Spain). Examination of the skull and mandible revealed evidences of bilateral condylar fracture and dislocation. Lesions were observed macroscopically and radiology was used as a complementary method of scrutiny, especially in cases of unclear observation. Irregular morphology of the cond…

  • Age estimation by tooth/pulp ratio in canines by peri-apical X-rays

Open Access•Stefano De Luca, Inmaculada Alemán et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 3

  • Effects of nutrition on timing of mineralization in teeth in a Peruvian sample by the Cameriere and Demirjian methods

Open Access•Roberto Cameriere, Robert Cameriere et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2007

Nutrition did not seem to affect the process of tooth growth. As regards the accuracy of age estimation, the Cameriere method yielded more accurate estimates than the Demirjian method
