Correlates of Relationship Satisfaction in Lesbian Couples
This study broadens the construct of intimate relationships to include the experience of lesbian couples. Counseling Psychology's Public Image
One of the major issues in need of increased attention from professionals in the field of counseling psychology is that of public image. What type of image do we, as members of the discipline, wish to project? And how may we further the perception that counseling psychology is a vital resource to be utilized in addressing societal issues? This report, comprising several working papers presented at the Third National Conference for Counseling Psyc…
Social support networks for parenting and psychological well-being among dual-earner Mexican-American families
The conceptual framework of Caplan (1974) was used to investigate social support networks and psychological well-being in a sample of 142 parents in dual-earner Mexican-American families with children 12 years old or younger. Respondents completed a questionnaire that assessed network support, size, density, and effectiveness, and spouse support. Life satisfaction, positive affect toward family and work, and role conflict also were assessed. As p…

Working Lesbians: Role Conflicts and Coping Strategies
This study investigated areas of interrole and intrarole conflict reported by 79 lesbian working women and factors influencing the types of coping strategies these women used. The three coping strategies identified by Hall (1972) were used to code responses to a questionnaire sent to women on the mailing list of a local lesbian newsletter. The most frequently reported interrole conflicts were between the work and lover roles, and the most frequen…

Perceptions of Parental Role Responsibilities among Working People: Development of a Comprehensive Measure
This paper describes the development and content of a comprehensive measure of perceived parental role responsibilities among individuals employed fulltime. Essentially, a two-step procedure was followed. First, responses from a sample of 600 working women and men were used to select items that both males and females viewed as major parental role responsibilities regardless of the gender of a child. Responses from a second sample of 300 working m…
Conflicts Between Student/Professional, Parental, and Self-Development Roles: A Comparison of High and Low Effective Copers
This study investigated the coping strategies used by returning university students in dealing with conflicts between the demands of their students/professional role and their parental role or their student/professional role and their "self" as a self-actualized person. The 57 female and 28 male subjects used nine scales developed by the authors to describe their typical strategies for coping with their role conflict in one of these two areas. Su…
Masculine and Feminine Stereotypes and Adjustment: A Reanalysis
Deutsch and Gilbert (1976) used Bern's balance model in a study of self-perceptions of stereotypic masculine and feminine attributes, Rogerian-type conflict, and personal adjustment. Because important conceptual and computational changes have occurred in the measures of psychological masculinity and femininity, a reanalysis of these data was undertaken using Spence and Helmreich's absolute model. The reanalyses demonstrate the advantage of distin…

Perceptions of Sex Roles: The Influences of Client Gender and Student-Counselor Attitudes
The author asked student counselors to predict sex-role behaviors of a hypothetical female or male client experiencing academic and personal difficulties. In general, student-counselor attitudes (liberal or moderate) toward sex roles influenced their predictions of client behavior in work and education roles but not in family roles. The sex of the client also influenced their judgements. The author discusses the implications of these findings for…
