  • Das Nibelungenlied“ und die deutsche Spitalsbruderschaft

    Open Access•Dietmar Schneidergruber•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2026

„Das Nibelungenlied“ is a well-researched heroic epic, but there are still aspects that have not been seen. For all its brutality and cruelty, there are also aspects of conflict avoidance and the healing of the wounded. This text deals with these aspects, drawing conclusions about the function of the work and its possible patrons. The author assumes a literarisation of Staufer rule

  • Sô nieman spricht oder wenn niemand klagt

    Open Access•Dietmar Schneidergruber•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2025

The article examines the fairy tale Die drei Mönche zu Kolmar from a legal perspective. One can understand it as a fairy tale that complains about the private administration of justice. It is therefore connected to many of Kaufringer’s fairy tales, who also deal with the legal process in cgm 270. The fairy tale was not perceived as bizarre in the Middle Ages; the last verse must be understood differently than before. Only then does the meaning of…

  • Von den Herren und Bürgern in „Der Wiener Meerfahrt“

    Open Access•Dietmar Schneidergruber•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2025

This text deals with the function of the tale “Der Wiener Meerfahrt” and focuses on the differentiation between bürger and herren . Criticism is not directed at the bürger , but only at the herren , and this is carried out with well-known Christian motives. The rise to power of the Habsburgs in the city of Vienna, who held on to Ottokar II Premysl for a long time, comes into focus. The tale is not unique to this period, but fits well with other t…

  • Ein schöner spruch von eynem kauffmann

    Open Access•Dietmar Schneidergruber•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2025

This essay places Martin Maier’s text “Ein schöner Spruch von einem Kaufmann” in the context of the legal development of the new Roman law. The example shows the abuse of the possibility of torture and the reception of the text in the 16th century. Martin Luther also uses the text in his fight against Cardinal Albrecht of Magdeburg, while Pauli sees the cause in the disregard for the merchant’s status

  • Die Partnerwahl in den Mären „Die halbe Birne“ und „Das Häslein“

    Open Access•Dietmar Schneidergruber•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2024

The text compares two tales that deal with finding a partner. In the context of a legal gap after the IV . Lateran Council regarding the validity of marriage, two different cases are presented, in which the naive young woman in the tale Das Häslein regains her social honor. The king’s daughter in the tale Die halbe Birne goes into an uncertain future, her father the king loses control over his daughter. Both tales disqualify the woman’s lust, esp…

  • Die Konsensehe von 1215 und ihre Darstellung in der Literatur

    Open Access•Dietmar Schneidergruber•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2024

This article establishes a connection between the fairy Mären Das Schneekind and Die Suche nach dem glücklichen Ehepaar . The solution presented in the book of penance for a wife with an illegitimate child comes up against the limits set by the cuckolded husband in the fairy Märe Das Schneekind . It is as it were a critique of the preachers’ approach and also shows the limits of the church in what many consider to be private matters. The other fa…

  • Der fünfmal getötete Pfarrer

    Open Access•Dietmar Schneidergruber•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2024

This essay establishes a connection between the late medieval fairy tale Der fünfmal getötete Pfarrer and the penitential of John of Erfurt. A critical examination of the state of research takes place and an alternative is offered. The tale can also be a critical examination of church rules that are ridiculously pushed to their limits

  • Der Pfaffe Amis und das IV. Laterankonzil

    Dietmar Schneidergruber•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2023

This article establishes a connection between the decisions of the Fourth Lateran Council and Der Pfaffe Amis , a work by the Knitter. Doing so results in totally new perspectives on the work, which is therefore connected to anticlerical literature. Der Pfaffe Amis is not just a comedy, as researchers thought, but it stands in continuity with Latin poems like, e.g., the Hierapigra ad purgandos praelatos by Aegidius of Corbeil or the work Speculum…

  • Reinhart Fuchs“ und der Arzt aus Salerno

    Dietmar Schneidergruber•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2023

The article deals with the interpretation and dating of the „Märe“ Reinhart Fuchs, with its political function being elaborated. This is accomplished by means of a hierarchical order of the animal protagonists in a society of estates. The author of Reinhart Fuchs establishes a context with the „Märe“ Der arme Heinrich and draws on the new medical developments from Salerno, but also uses his own medical knowledge. Thereby, King Vrevel is character…

  • “Mauricius von Craûn”

    Dietmar Schneidergruber•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2022

To this day, “Mauricius of Craûn” still holds a number of research desiderata. Author and dating are undetermined, but also the purpose of this “Märe” is to be questioned. Records appeared late and thus provide little information for the research questions. The author’s approach to this “Märe” is to look at the characters as allegorical figures. This results in a new perspective and it also indicates the text’s closeness to the papal bull “Vox in…
