    Open Access•James P Mcgregor•ARTICLE•Communist and Post-Communist…•1996•Cited by: 6

Political scientists seek to explain political behavior. In so doing, they frequently rely on factors such as class, income, religion, age, sex, education, race, residence, and the like, or their aggregate in the case of comparative and international studies. What is conspicuously missing from almost all mainstream political science literature is the mention of constitutions or law as influences on individual or collective behavior. The underlyin…

bility that some of the China specialists are government contractors, and their government ties may have contributed to the similarities in policy preferences. However, we still believe that the policy congruence is largely because of shared perceptions about cultural as well as strategic and political factors in China studies than links to the government. We did not ask whether people have government contracts in our survey because we think that…

  • Value Structures in a Developed Socialist System: The Case of Czechoslovakia

    James P Mcgregor•ARTICLE•Comparative Politics•1991•Cited by: 8•References: 3

All socialist governments come to power promising that they will bring about a new, fairer organization of society. If these governments are Marxist-Leninist in orientation, they claim to have an outline according to which society is to be reorganized. Among the assumptions of this outline is that the basic values of the system conflict with those of the old, that many of the old values must be eliminated and ones instilled if a order of affairs …

  • Polish Public Opinion in a Time of Crisis

    James P Mcgregor•ARTICLE•Comparative Politics•1984•Cited by: 4

Revolutions are normally carried out under conditions in which revolutionary organizations are unable to conduct opinion polls, and the beleaguered government, being more interested in its own survival, seldom does so either. The Polish revolution of 1980 was a notable exception to this rule. It took place in a highly developed country with a long history of sociological research and a good infrastructure for sampling public attitudes. After the …

  • Possible Falsification of Survey Data: An Analysis of a Mail Survey in the Soviet Union

    Stan A Kaplowitz, Vladimir Shlapentokh et al.•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•1982•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Analysis of data from a mall survey in the Soviet Union, carried out by the agency responsible for the distribution of America Illustrated, strongly suggests that the data were falsified. Information about Soviet society (including the results of a number of other surveys of the Soviet population) and probability theory were used to generate a set of expected results for this survey. The actual results differed dramatically from the expected—the …

  • Government Job-Hunting in Washington

    James P Mcgregor•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•1978

Probably the main topic of conversation at most recent professional meetings of political scientists is the job market. For graduate students and professors alike, getting a job, keeping a job, or improving one's position take precedence over traditional scholarly concerns. Statistics gathered by APSA and presented in PS by the Association's official Cassandra, Tom Mann, point to a worsening job situation despite some success in the profession's …
