  • General corruption scale: Development and psychometric properties

Open Access•João Gabriel Modesto, Ronaldo Pilati et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2026

Corruption is a pervasive phenomenon that erodes institutional structures and undermines social relations. Despite its widespread impact, little attention has been given to developing and providing empirical evidence of the construct validity and reliability of measures assessing individual differences in support for corruption. This study seeks to address this gap by introducing, for the first time, the General Corruption Scale and presenting th…

  • “We are the most corrupt country”: Brazilian inferiority complex and corruption

João Gabriel Modesto, Ronaldo Pilati et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Social Psychology•2025

The “Complexo de Vira-Lata” (CVL) is a unique, special, and extreme form of ingroup bias in which Brazilians behave as if they want to antithetically devalue their national ingroup. In this research, we investigate how the CVL contributes to understanding corruption perception among Brazilians. Across two studies (Study 1: n = 162; Study 2: n = 1200), we found that participants showed a CVL effect by consistently perceiving Brazil as more corrupt…

  • Rethinking Trust in Scientists as a Network Model: A Global Analysis and Implications for Science Communication

    Open Access•Luiz Gustavo de Almeida, Ronaldo Pilati•ARTICLE•Science Communication•2025•References: 4

Trust in scientists is a communicative construct shaped by public perception of scientists. Using network psychometrics on responses from 71,922 individuals in 68 countries, we model trust as an interconnected community system of attitudes and beliefs. Sincerity emerges as the most central node, linking perceptions of competence, integrity, and goodwill. This dynamic structure challenges reflective latent models and emphasizes trust as a product …

    Open Access•Cleno Couto, Ronaldo Pilati et al.•ARTICLE•Cross-Cultural Research•2025•References: 40

The tensions between individual rights and the common good have historically shaped law, politics, and public policy. This study explores how cultural factors impact moral judgments worldwide. Focusing on the personal force effect, which refers to how physical involvement in harm influences moral judgments, we analyzed Cultural Value Orientations, Social Axioms, and Tightness as potential moderators of the relationship between personal force and …

  • Rebellious yet apathetic: System justification and learned helplessness in collective action

    Open Access•Cleno Couto, Ronaldo Pilati•ARTICLE•Revista Latinoamericana de…•2024

Introduction: The decay of democracy has led to a growth in political protests worldwide, but even when people perceive their situation as unfair, some do not act. We propose that system justification and learned helplessness are relevant factors in explaining this. Objective: To test a model of collective action that considers factors of inaction. Method: Through structural equation modelling, we estimated models with data from 961 Brazilians, v…

  • Does anchoring vary across cultures? Expanding the Many Labs analysis

    Open Access•Regis K Kakinohana, Ronaldo Pilati et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 33

Numerous investigations have examined anchoring effects, but most of them studied individuals from similar cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Replication studies have shown that anchoring heuristics have heterogeneous effects across different cultural groups. In the present investigation, we examined this heterogeneity by looking for associations between effect size and cultural values orientation. We conducted pre‐registered meta‐analyses o…

    Open Access•Regis K Kakinohana, Ronaldo Pilati•ARTICLE•Psicologia Reflexão e Crítica•2023•References: 69

A better understanding of factors that can affect preferences and choices may contribute to more accurate decision-making. Several studies have investigated the effects of cognitive biases on decision-making and their relationship with cognitive abilities and thinking dispositions. While studies on behaviour, attitude, personality, and health worries have examined their relationship with human values, research on cognitive bias has not investigat…

  • Cultural Syndromes in a Changing World: A Longitudinal Investigation of Brazilian Jeitinho Social Problem-Solving Strategies

Open Access•Ronald Fischer, Johannes A Karl et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2022

We report a longitudinal study of Jeitinho brasileiro (salient cultural characteristic of Brazil) during a period of significant political instability. Previous historical and anthropological sources have pointed to the importance of political instability for cultural changes in behaviors such as jeitinho. We are the first to examine possible individual-level dynamics over time, reporting a 3-year longitudinal study ( N = 205) of two dimensions t…

  • An Exploration of Within-Cultural Differences of a Culture-specific Syndrome: The Case of Brazilian jeitinho

    Open Access•Ronaldo Pilati, Ronald Fischer•ARTICLE•Cross-Cultural Research•2022•References: 26

To what extent are cultural syndromes invariant within nations or can we identify within-cultural variability in structure and endorsement of cultural syndromes? These questions are central to a) recent discussions around the relevance of nation-states in cultural vs. geographical psychology and b) explorations of how cultural syndromes described in anthropological research are endorsed by individuals within and across regions within the country.…

  • Are religious and nonreligious people different in terms of moral judgment and empathy

Amanda Rabelo, Ronaldo Pilati•ARTICLE•Psychology of Religion and…•2021

Benevolence, kindness, and empathy are valued virtues among many of the world's major religions. It is common that people in many cultures see religion as the source of these moral virtues and that one must believe in God to be moral. Despite these widespread assumptions about the associations of religion with morality, some studies raise doubts about the causal connection between them. The main goal of the present study was to test if religious …

    Open Access•Gail M Ferguson, Diana Boer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 47

We investigated whether Reggae preferences are associated with similar values across cultures compared with its culture of origin-Jamaica. We analyzed the correlations between preferences for Reggae music and Schwartz's 10 value typ…

    Open Access•Richard A Klein, Kate A Ratliff et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2014•Cited by: 112•References: 4

Although replication is a central tenet of science, direct replications are rare in psychology. This research tested variation in the replicability of 13 classic and contemporary effects across 36 independent samples totaling 6,344 participants. In the aggregate, 10 effects replicated consistently. One effect – imagined contact reducing prejudice – showed weak support for replicability. And two effects – flag priming influencing conservatism and …

While direct replications such as the “Many Labs” project are extremely valuable in testing the reliability of published findings across laboratories, they reflect the common reliance in psychology on single vignettes or stimuli, which limits the scope of the conclusions that can be reached. New experimental tools and statistical techniques make it easier to routinely sample stimuli, and to appropriately treat them as random factors. We encourage…

Open Access•Ronald Fischer, Maria Cristina Ferreira et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 24

We examine what situational cues may influence corruption intentions of individuals in a high corruption context. We primed Brazilian participants with images related to corruption, but with different behavioral connotations (either images suggesting political corruption or images of a Malandro, a powerless antihero who blurs moral boundaries by breaking the law to survive). Corruption intentions increased in Studies 1 and 2 when individuals were…

Two studies explore the structure and psychological makeup of jeitinho, a Brazilian indigenous construct associated with problem-solving strategies in strong hierarchies. Study 1 used a scenario approach with nonstudent participants and demonstrated that jeitinho can be described by a three-dimensional structure: corruption, creativity, and social norm breaking. Study 2 used individual and social norm scenarios in nonstudent samples and demonstra…
