The neolithic burials of Changis‐sur-Marne Les Pétreaux (Seine‐et‐Marne) in their regional context in the Paris Basin
Between 1995 and 2004 quarrying by the aggregate extraction company Cemex over an area of seventy hectares in the double meander of Armentières upstream of Meaux provided an exceptional opportunity to investigate a site located in the floodplain of the lower Marne valley. This very large preventive excavation area revealed multiple traces of occupation of a site occupied intermittently from the 5th millennium BC to the 4th century AD. Ten burials…
The protohistoric site of Punta di Casteddu (Sartène, Southern Corsica): A Preliminary Note
The protohistoric site of Punta di Casteddu is located in south-western Corsica, in the Sartenais region. It was discovered some twenty years ago and has recently been reassessed as part of an archaeological fieldwalking survey carried out within the research project “Cauria, the megalithic site of Stazzona – I Stantari” directed by André D’Anna. The site was occupied and used from the middle of the Late Bronze Age to the middle of the Early Iron…
New Book Chronicle
By the time this chronicle appears Antiquity's reviews section will be in the hands of my successor, Robert Witcher. I wish him as much pleasure doing the job as I have had. It has been a great privilege to see thousands of books pass through and to pick a few to report on each quarter. In theory, it is Christmas every day: the post brings a new book, a fresh view from distant parts, on a period seldom familiar. In reality it has often been hard …
Cottam, Cowlam and Environs: An Anglo-Saxon Estate on The Yorkshire Wolds
From 1993–95 investigation of a so-called ‘productive site’ known as Cottam B revealed an Anglo-Saxon settlement occupied during the eighth to ninth centuries AD, succeeded in the late ninth to early tenth century by an Anglo-Scandinavian farmstead. The final report (Richards 1999a) concluded that the Anglo-Saxon settlement may have been an outlying farming and hunting dependency set within a royal estate centred upon Driffield, but that followin…

New Book Chronicle
The pile on a reviewer's table can be an eclectic mix: how to combine into a coherent whole the lives of archaeologists, decipherers, revolutionaries, spiritualists, ship-builders and Nazis is the challenge set for this quarter's chronicle
New Book Chronicle
Many a book misses being reviewed in Antiquity's Reviews section. The reasons are myriad and sometimes even the most blatant flattery of potential reviewers won't work. This is especially true of very large handbooks containing a cast of thousands and chapters by most of the big players in a particular subject. Take the Oxford handbooks: to let them go completely unreviewed would be shameful, as they are excellent overviews. But reviewing 4400 pa…
New Book Chronicle
This quarter's chronicle considers books describing archaeological practice and tradition, past and present, the world over. Examples come from Britain, Spain, Africa and South America
New Book Chronicle
This quarter's chronicle rambles [on?] across pre-and protohistoric continental Europe, drawing attention to a number of collaborative research projects, doctoral dissertations, archaeological historiography, overviews and exhibitions. Subjects range from Pleistocene Greece to nineteenth-century bridges, with a little more on the Neolithic, Greek surveys and central-eastern Europe in Celtic times. Along the way some authors and publishers are gen…

New Book Chronicle
In one way or another all the books featured in this chronicle's selection are about how things are done in archaeology. How to record and dig sites, how to manage landscapes, how to present them, how it was done in the past. This leads to some thinking aloud on the theme of 'best practice' while also highlighting some outstanding achievements, indeed 'best practice' without the prescription
New Book Chronicle
This spring chronicle comes in three quite unrelated parts: a few reflections on personal engagements with archaeology, some comments on a couple of books treating British Neolithic monuments
New Book Chronicle
Sooner or later it comes to us all -in this case the task of reviewing a stream of books devoted to the disposal of human bodies and the funerary behaviour enacted in the past and dissected in the present. The publication of two good textbooks on human remains, Roberts' Handbook and Duday's Archaeothanatology, offers an opportunity to explore briefly how the material evidence for dead people has been treated in recent publications whose subject m…
New Book Chronicle
Each quarter brings its harvest of books which collectively give cause to celebrate -mostly -recent achievements in archaeology. Subject matter ranges from the contribution of excavation to European preand protohistory, photography of monuments and grave goods, understanding heritage management, to a couple of offerings derived from historical archaeology in the USA. Some books are magnificent, others less inspiring
New Book Chronicle
If reason need be given for the choice of books this quarter, they are all about people, mainly peoples of the past known from historical sources, and modern people familiar to us but distorted through the lens of observation. The overarching theme is that we are outsiders looking in, sometimes with great precision, sometimes only dimly recognising shadowy figures and speculating about who they were

New Book Chronicle
One of the fleeting pleasures of being Reviews Editor at Antiquity is opening parcels. Publishers daily send exciting dispatches from the four corners of the world, and too few books, albeit a respectable proportion, make it into the reviews section. The opportunity, and distraction, of reading out of pure curiosity is always present. In this chronicle I propose to take fellow readers and procrastinators on an express transcontinental tour from t…

This chronicle begins around the Bay of Naples, in the company of books exploring Pompeii and its surroundings. We then return to Britain for a round-up of books on British pre-and protohistory
New Book Chronicle
The greater part of this chronicle deals with syntheses on French archaeology. These bring together results obtained on account of the unprecedented pace of development that took place there over the past twenty years or so. Some comments will also be found on a couple of collections discussing aspects of (mainly) European prehistory: burial practices and the early Neolithic Linearbandkeramik. A final note concerns the listing of archaeological s…

Megaliths dominate the scene, but settlement and barrow excavations and studies considering the wider landscape are also presented. Bridging the gap at La Téne
Some thirty years ago, I took part in the Seminar für Ur- und Frühgeschichte der Universität Basel's traditional field trip to La Tène. We discussed the various interpretations put forward for a site that had given its name to the later Iron Age in Europe: bridges, toll, battle, fort, refugium, accident, votive deposit, sanctuary. We berated the methods of investigation of the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: they could not bridge …

Piles of animals, smaller piles of records from the 1920s to 1940s, revisited: three reports on three sites, seminal for the recognition of the antiquity of humans in North America, showcase new investigative methods and techniques to further our understanding of human-animal interaction in the dying days of the Pleistocene and the early days of the Holocene. These same techniques are applied to another kill site, this time much older and ascribe…

New Book Chronicle
Among the many publications that vie for space on Antiquity' s shelves and clamour for attention by reviewers, there appears to be a marked increase in books which grapple with one or other aspect of identity; more particularly with the creation of identities, national or individual, through archaeology, or the other way round, with archaeology's role in shaping collective and personal perceptions of the past. This quarter's chronicle features tw…
