Similarities and Contrasts in Artistic and Scientific Creation-Discovery
The author summarizes 13 of his publications in Leonardo on the comparison of artistic and scientific creation-discovery. This article details how fundamental aspects of artistic creation are clarified by mechanisms initially introduced to describe scientific discovery. These aspects are linked to the equilibrium between an artist's pictorial idea and the material or technique used. The author also sheds light on art by contrasting it to science.…

Features that are often thought characteristic of artistic creation are also found to be typical of scientific discovery. The article tries to find what really differentiates the two
Les Cheveux de la Realite
A Course on Art and Science Delivered at the Universite de Provence
The object of the course was to describe the making of a painting or, more generally, a work of art, and to compare mechanisms underlying creation in art and discovery in science. This comparison has several motivations: First, artists cannot ignore our essentially scientific and technological civilization. Second, art and science are the two main ways of expressing the natural world. Comparison of one with the other allows us to understand bette…
Has My Practice of Science Influenced My Art
The author, an artist who is also a scientist, does not use modern technology, nor does he make use of scientific concepts in his art, other than in his writings on art and in a few of his paintings. His art has not been consciously influenced by science, but there may be some unconscious influence, if only as a result of the scientific discussion contained in his writings on art. The author describes and analyses aspects of his art that can perh…

On the Relevance of Piaget's Theory to the Visual Arts
Piaget's genetic epistemology [1], which treats of the formation and evolution of science, is based on the parallelism between the historic development of science and the development of intelligence in children. This parallelism reveals the mechanism common to these developments and thereby sheds a new light on the evolution of scientific concepts and theories. It is tempting to search in the same manner for a parallel between the evolution of an…

On a Priori Order and Order to Be Discovered
On Mental Images and Their Pictorial Representation
The author believes that painters in different epochs, without necessarily being fully aware of the fact, have represented in paintings their mental images of reality. He describes characteristics of paintings and compares them to mental images that have been studied by psychologists. He shows, in particular, how sketches are a more faithful representation of mental images than ‘finished’ paintings. He also points out that the often indefinite qu…
