  • Forensic examination of the hand

Open Access•Lucina Hackman, Black et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 31

Using anatomical feature comparison to consider potential matches from hand images to identify or eliminate suspects in an investigation, commonly relating to those involved in the production of images of child sexual abuse, is an emerging forensic methodology that has become increasingly utilized by police forces within the United Kingdom. This article gives an overview of the development of a process that is based on an understanding of anatomi…

Open Access•Lucina Hackman, Black et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2023•Citada por: 1

This supplement has been a stimulating project which has allowed us not only to examine the areas of work that forensic anthropologists are involved in on a daily basis, but also to explore the cross-fertilization that continues to occur between forensic anthropology, biological anthropology, and social anthropology. We are at an exciting point in our profession, having established a certification process within the United Kingdom, with the Royal…

  • Forensic Anthropology

    Open Access•Black, Sue Black•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2018

Forensic anthropology is the analysis of the human body, or what remains of the body, for the medicolegal purpose of establishing identity. It is a multidisciplinary endeavor that applies the knowledge of biological anthropology and human osteology to cases where human remains are skeletonized or where a detailed understanding of the growth and development, morphology, or norms of the human body can assist other disciplines in positive identifica…

Open Access•Catriona Davies, Lucina Hackman et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2015

The overall relationship between chronological age and the level of persistence or obliteration of the epiphyseal scar was found to be of insufficient strength to support a causative link. It is, therefore, necessary that caution is employed in their interpretation in relation to skeletal age estimation practices

    Open Access•René Gapert, Black et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2009•Citada por: 6•Referências: 54

Fragmentary human remains compromised by different types of inhumation, or physical insults such as explosions, fires, and mutilations may frustrate the use of traditional morphognostic sex determination methods. The basicranium is protected by a large soft tissue mass comprising muscle, tendon, and ligaments. As such, the occipital region may prove useful for sex identification in cases of significantly fragmented remains. The aims of this paper…

  • The skulls of Chief Nonosabasut and his wife Demasduit - Beothuk of Newfoundland

    Open Access•Black, M Black et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009•Citada por: 2•Referências: 23

In March 1819 a young woman was abducted by white settlers and her husband was killed. They were among the few remaining members of the Beothuk of Newfoundland. Eight years later their skulls were removed from their burial hut and transferred to the University of Edinburgh. This paper describes these two important skulls and details injuries and pathologies not previously recorded in detail. Chief Nonosabasut displayed evidence of extensive traum…

    Open Access•Carme Rissech, Black et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2007•Citada por: 8•Referências: 28

An understanding of the basic growth rates and patterns of development for each element of the human skeleton is important for a thorough understanding and interpretation of data in all areas of skeletal research. Yet surprisingly little is known about the detailed ontogenetic development of many bones, including the scapula. With the intention of describing the changes that accompany postnatal ontogeny in the scapula and algorithms to predict su…

    Open Access•Black, Sue Black et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1997•Referências: 1

This paper describes a case of cervical rib that was observed in a skeleton from the St Bride's documented skeletal collection. The ontogenetic development of this phenomenon is discussed with reference to potential clinical symptoms including cyanosis, paraesthesia, muscular atrophy and even digital gangrene. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

  • Age Changes in the Clavicle

Open Access•Black, Sue Black et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996

Of all the long bones in the human skeleton, it is the clavicle which displays the longest period of growth-related activity, rendering it particularly useful for the estimation of age at death in the earlier years. However, because of the universal paucity of documented juvenile remains, most previous studies have, by necessity, not only been based on material of estimated age at death but also restricted to a narrow age range. The aim of the pr…

  • Early fetal maturity assessed from patterns of ossification in the hand and foot

    Open Access•Black, Sue Maclaughlin‐black et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1995•Citada por: 1•Referências: 8

The assessment of fetal age at death is fraught with many complications and often the determination of the maturity of the fetus is a more realistic solution to the question of fetal viability. This study examines the pattern of appearance of primary centres of ossification in the fetal hand and foot, in an attempt to construct a maturity continuum. The results show that completion of ossification in the hand precedes that in the foot and general…

  • Age estimation from the pars basilaris of the fetal and juvenile occipital bone

    Open Access•Louise Scheuer, Black et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1994•Citada por: 17•Referências: 2

The pars basilaris of the human occipital bone is reported to be of considerable value for age estimation in juvenile skeletal remains between early fetal periods and 6 years of age, when it fuses to the remainder of the bone. The aim of this investigation was to examine the relationship between various dimensions of the pars basilaris, and assess their reliability for accurate age estimation. The results confirm the usefulness of the bone in thi…
