    Open Access•William Kolbrener•ARTICLE•Modern Judaism - A Journal of…•2018•References: 1

In 1825, in the State Papers Office in London, a long and idiosyncratic tract on Christian Theology—written in Latin, with the title De Doctrina Christiana—was discovered. Previously unknown, the work was among the state papers collected by Oliver Cromwell’s Foreign Minister, John Milton, the author of Paradise Lost.1 For scholars, the posthumous “publication” of the work has become an opportunity for reassessing Milton’s major poetic works, and …

  • The New Milton Criticism

Open Access•Roni Strier, John Rogers et al.•BOOK•New Milton Criticism•2012

The New Milton Criticism seeks to emphasize ambivalence and discontinuity in Milton's work and interrogate the assumptions and certainties in previous Milton scholarship. Contributors to the volume move Milton's open-ended poetics to the centre of Milton studies by showing how analysing irresolvable questions – religious, philosophical and literary critical – transforms interpretation and enriches appreciation of his work. The New Milton Criticis…

  • Death of Moses Revisited

    William Kolbrener•ARTICLE•American imago•2010

This article provides a Freudian reading of rabbinic representations of the death of Moses, but without the etiological baggage of Freud's own meditations in Moses and Monotheism . For the rabbis, the death of Moses was not the "murder" Freud constructed, and it led not to guilt and repression but rather to anxiety over the loss of the absolute certainty grounded in Moses' unique prophecy. Whereas for Freud Jewish guilt and the obsessive neurosis…

Among contemporary literary theorists—and in the humanities in general—theological approaches toward interpretation have been dismissed in favor of hermeneutic models committed to the contingency, partiality, and historicity of all interpretative practice. Against the grain of this tendency, which tends to dismiss all vestiges of theology from postmodern habits of reading and interpretation, critics like Daniel Boyarin and David Stern, have, over…
