    Rebekah Klein-Pejšová•ARTICLE•The Polish Review•2026

How and when did it become “self-evident” and “inevitable” to the international community that the surviving Jews of postwar Europe belonged elsewhere, and that elsewhere could only be Palestine/later Israel? Sarah Cramsey's determined and meticulous book, Uprooting the Diaspora, confronts this fraught question on a journey that takes us deep into the social, political, and intellectual processes that shaped, in both long-term and immediate ways,…

    Open Access•Rebekah Klein-Pejšová•ARTICLE•Journal of Austrian-American…•2023

The ways in which István Deák’s scholarship influences East Central European Jewish historiography present a paradox. While on one hand he elevates a deeply human approach to history writing that centers on individuals and their choices and highlights contingencies and patterns of behavior, on the other he is preoccupied with the institutions that hold states together. In this way, Jews largely represent a Staatsvolk, a state people, in his work,…

  • Borders on the Move

    Open Access•Rebekah Klein-Pejšová•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2022

The Hungarian–Slovak border region underwent no fewer than five significant border revisions in the brutal years between 1938 and 1948. Each required the population of the territory to reorient itself to an altered geopolitical system, in which every step was a new negotiation through a minefield of fateful ordeals concerning changes in sovereignty, military occupations, a world war, migrations and ethnic cleansing. The borderland’s inhabitants r…

  • A di G ordon . Toward Nationalism’s End

    Open Access•Rebekah Klein-Pejšová•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2019

One of the most striking photos illustrating Adi Gordon’s well-written and satisfying biography Toward Nationalism’s End: An Intellectual Biography of Hans Kohn depicts Kohn on the beach, probably in Tel Aviv in the late 1920s, in full suit and tie with dress shoes, bending down to pose with his toddler-age son while appropriately attired beachgoers look on. Kohn appears hot and uncomfortable. The sun beats down on his furrowed brow. He is out of…
