More to the picture than meets the eye? Governors’ popularity, voters’ polarization, and political budget cycles
The use of incentives by politicians in terms of fiscal expenditures, such as engineering a political budget cycle, depends on their popularity and on the degree of polarization of the voters. In this study, we assume that this relationship is nonlinear, using data for the US governors over 30 years. Furthermore, we show that the association between popularity, polarization, and fiscal expenditures is U-shaped. The more polarized the electoral ba…
Skyfall: A Survival Analysis of the IMF Executive Board Members
In the absence of a retirement age constraint at the IMF, this study explores the tenure persistence within the Board of Directors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 2009 to 2021, through a survival analysis. The findings highlight that extrinsic factors, namely sovereign crises, banking crises, the ratio of debt‐to‐GDP, and political transformations, exert a predominant role in tenure longevity, while sociodemographic characteristics …
The limits of behavioral nudges to increase youth turnout: Experimental evidence from two French elections
There is a significant gap in turnout between young people and older voters. The failure to instill a voting habit at an early age may have long term consequences in terms of future political participation as well as on other civic behaviors. Using a pre-registered online experiment with 3790 subjects, we implemented behavioral interventions aiming to stimulate youth turnout in the 2022 French presidential election. We rely on an innovative incen…

Rallying around the EU flag: Russia's invasion of Ukraine and attitudes toward European integration
This article uses a survey amongst students at European universities to explore whether Russia's invasion of Ukraine has affected attitudes towards European integration. Some respondents completed the survey just before Russia's assault on 24 February 2022, and some did so just afterwards , thus delivering a quasi‐experimental design situation, which we exploit. Our results suggest that the ominous news about the Russian attack increased the part…

A disaster always rings twice: Early life experiences and central bankers' reactions to natural disasters
We analyze the impact of natural disasters experienced in the early life of central bankers to assess their reaction to present‐day similar events. We use a panel dataset covering 68 (developed and developing) countries, for the period 2000 Q1 to 2017 Q4, to examine how the very‐short‐run dynamics of inflation is affected by the (actual) natural disasters, and how past experiences affect the immediate reaction of central bankers to these shocks. …
Debates and dissent inside the Fomc during WWII
We demonstrate that even though during WWII the interest rate was close to zero supporting the financing of the military effort, dissent inside the FOMC occurred with a similar frequency to other policy episodes. Our analysis highlights that the debates which resulted in dissents turned around two broad issues: the size of the Fed’s balance sheet as well as the functioning of and communication with financial markets. Thus, we argue that the conve…
The Grand Experiment of Communism: Discovering the Trade-Off between Equality and Efficiency
This paper examines how the interplay between economic incentives and social preferences transmitted by ideology plays a role in the rise and fall of communism. We introduce inequality-averse and inefficiency-averse agents and model their conflict in ideology, triggered by envy. The socioeconomic dynamics generate a pendulum-like switch from markets to a centrally planned economy abolishing private ownership, and back to restoring market incentiv…

When are Central Bankers Removed
