The effect of morality meters on ethical decision making in video games
Suicide in Nazi Germany
This article focuses on two lesser-known characteristics of German Jewish life during the Third Reich: the high rate of suicide amongst Jews and the extraordinary impediments to their migration. Beginning with memoir-narrative which centres on my Jewish father’s revelation that my grandmother and great-grandmother had committed suicide, the paper then outlines the reasons for and characteristics of suicide in Nazi Germany, and the phenomenon’s co…
Morality Meters and Their Impacts on Moral Choices in Videogames
Morality meters are a commonly used mechanic in many ethically notable video games. However, there have been several theoretical critiques of such meters, including that people can find them alienating, they can instrumentalise morality, and they reduce morality to a binary of good and evil with no room for complexity. While there has been much theoretical discussion of these issues, there has been far less empirical investigation. We address thi…
Reconceptualizing maternal work
The Maternal Heroine
There is a Chinese curse quoted in glib desk calendars that have a phrase for each day: 'May you live in interesting times'. In fiction, maternity has not often been seen as terribly interesting, and in the real world having babies often stops a mother from writing, off and on and even for years. The story of mothers and babies seems elusive, not fit for the imagination, for where's the story? The 'maternal heroine', a protagonist and main charac…
Provenance
In these extracts from 'Provenance', Rafaela discovers she is pregnant while staying on Bob and Clarissa Carmichael's farm, and attempts violently to end the pregnancy. In the second extract, Chella and Rafaela have been separated by misunderstandings, and Rafi must wait for the Carmichael family's return to the farm before going on to Melbourne alone. These events are a turning point in the novel: Rafi's dream of leaving home to become an artist…
Practicing interdisciplinarity
Practice-led research is inherently interdisciplinary, with practitioners engaging with a range of knowledges and methods through processes of selection, integration and synthesis. Claims are made for the unique qualities of both the creative arts artefacts produced through this practice, and for the research approaches used by creative researchers. However, a substantial amount of 'genre blurring' (Geertz 1980) is occurring within the humanities…
Mothering and Resistance
Until Our Hearts Are on the Ground’: Aboriginal Mothering, Oppression, Resistance and Rebirth. D. Memee Lavell-Harvard and Jeannette Corbiere Lavell, eds, 2006. Toronto: Demeter Press. Janani: Mot
Churned and Spurned in the Flexible World of Work
Accelerated by the new internet technologies, the past two decades have been characterised by a globalisation of trade and communications, along with major shifts in the balance between manufacturing and knowledge driven economies. New organisational cultures have grown out of and have reflexively driven these changes, and these new organisational cultures of work are registered and enacted by employees through a plethora of micro-practices in th…
