  • Phillip N. Haberkern. Patron Saint and Prophet

    Zdenek V David•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2018

The year 2015 was of special significance for the study of the Czech national hero Jan Hus. It was one hundred years earlier, on the five-hundredth anniversary of Hus’s execution by fire in July 1415, that Thomas Masaryk launched in Switzerland the Czech independence movement that led to the disintegration of the Habsburg Empire at the end of World War I. The six-hundredth anniversary stimulated the appearance of significant new literature on Hus…

The purpose of this article is to address the controversial issue of the status of the Utraquist Church in the Kingdom of Bohemia in consequence of the drafting of the Bohemian Confession in 1575. The chronological scope is limited to the period up to 1609, when the issuance of the Letter of Majesty in 1609 formalized the gentlemen's agreement of 1575 and altered the ecclesiastical structure accordingly. • Hajek, Dubravius, and the Jews

    Zdenek V David•ARTICLE•Sixteenth Century Journal•1996

Two disparate viewpoints on Jewish issues emerged in sixteenth-century Czech historiography, represented respectively by a parish priest, beholden to local interests, and provincial in his outlook, and by a prince of the Church, consorting with royalty and intellectually at the peak of a cosmopolitan Renaissance culture. Hajek's Czech Chronicle gathered the charges that would lead to the expulsion of the Jews from Bohemia in 1541. His work mirror…

L'A. s'interesse a l'image des juifs vehiculee par la litterature historique tcheque du XVI e siecle. Cette attitude est constituee par un paradoxe. La Diete propose l'eviction des juifs du pays. Le pas est finalement franchi par le Roi-Empereur Ferdin…

  • The Influence of Jacob Boehme on Russian Religious Thought

    Open Access•Zdenek V David•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•1962•Cited by: 2

In the eighteenth and more particularly in the nineteenth century, Russia enjoyed a reputation for unusually strong currents of religious spirituality. Most frequently these mystical currents have been traced to peculiarly native traditions, such as the Eastern patristic literature and the "naturally" mystical bent of the Russian mind. The influence of Western mysticism has been minimized, if not entirely overlooked. Actually, Western mysticism a…
