Thucydides 1.22
The Archon Year of Alkmeon and Isagoras' council of 300
In the first part of the article, the author argues that from the time of Kleisthenes' reforms at Athens onward each of the archonships was rotated through the phylai in a ten year cycle. Within each cycle the tribal order was determined by the lot. This circumstance permits the generation of a new argument for 507/6 as the archon year of Alkmeon which Pollux associates with the inception of the Kleisthenic constitution. In the second part, the a…
Melissus' Way of Seeming

The Date of Miltiades' Parian Expedition
The following note is a pendant to my recent article in this journal 1 dealing with some aspects of the Marathon campaign and its aftermath. An essential feature of my reconstruction was the dating of Miltiades' Parian expedition to the end of the campaigning season of 490/89, immediately after Athens' Marathon victory. I argued that Aristeides 2, political associate of the Alkmeonidai, was elected archon for 489/8 at a time of widespread disench…

The Command Structure and Generals of the Marathon Campaign
It is argued against N. G. L. Hammond that the polemarch was the supreme commander of the Athenian forces at Marathon and that the role of Miltiades and his fellow strategoi was subordinate. Appended are not on the marathonian strategoi ; real and fictitious
The Dates of the Archaic Owls of Athens belonging to Seltman's Groups H and L
In 1962, in an article entitled The Early Coinages of Athens and Euboea 2, W. P. Wallace argued that the wappenmunzen should be started later than 575 and that the series terminated in 510 with the fall of the Peisistratid tyranny. He further attempted to establish that the oldest owls with unwreathed helmet of Athene were issued in the period 510-490, the wreath being added about 490, « although, since it is an olive wreath, probably not in cele…
The new building of the Scott Polar Research Institute
As architects for the extensions of the Scott Polar Research Institute in Lensfield Road, Cambridge, we have been asked to supply a description of the building. The original Institute building, which was opened in November 1934, was designed by Sir Herbert Baker, R. A. It contained a museum on the ground floor, a library on the first floor, a picture gallery above and a few offices or research rooms. It is a small formal classical block, designed…
The Date of the Battle of the Sagra River
THERE ARE MANY DARK PLACES in the history of Magna Graecia. Not the least obscure is the conflict between Croton and Epizephyrian Locri which culminated in an unexpected Locrian triumph at the battle of the river Sagra.1 Our sources offer little but miraculous details and the three major authorities give different chronological indications. Strabo (261,263) attributes the decline of Croton to the loss of life sustained in the battle, and this sug…
