Anti-brand communities, negotiation of brand meaning, and the learning process: The case of Wal-Mart
In this article, we employ a case‐study method to investigate the learning processes used to negotiate brand meaning within an anti‐brand community. The negotiation of brand meaning is a social process where community members engage in brand‐related discourses, interpretations, and sense‐making. Situated within new social movement theory, we investigate the anti‐Wal‐Mart community. Our study identifies three learning processes that are fundamenta…
Determinants of Perceived Web Site Interactivity
Interactivity is a key feature of Web sites. This article identifies the determinants that enhance user perceptions of interactivity in a communication scenario in which consumers send instant messages to an e-store. Two conceptualizations of interactivity—telepresence theory and interactivity theory—predict that different antecedents (e.g., the number of clicks, response time, message type) are important. The results of Experiment 1 indicate tha…
Information Sources and Government Research: Ethical Conflicts and Solutions
Governments around the globe have long collected large amounts of information to achieve their goals. The emergence of the Internet has provided new opportunities for information exchange between governments and their citizens. This article presents illustrative examples of this information exchange, identifies associated ethical problems, examines approaches that governments have available to solve ethical dilemmas, and proposes a unified code o…

Consumer Tipping: A Cross-Country Study
Tipping differs from most economic transactions in that consumers who tip are paying a nonobligatory amount for a service that has already been received. Academic research on this unique yet pervasive consumer behavior has focused on the determinants of individuals' tipping decisions. Little attention has been directed at macrolevel issues such as cross-country differences in tipping practices and norms. This article addresses this deficiency by …
Knowledge Development and Scientific Status in Consumer-Behavior Research: A Social Exchange Perspective
The communication patterns (1977 through 1988) between the Journal of Consumer Research (JCR) and other related disciplines are examined from a social exchange perspective. As one way of assessing scientific status, we completed a citation analysis to consider both the journals that JCR authors cite and the journals that cite JCR. The results reveal that JCR performs an important bridging function between the psychology and marketing literatures.…
The Use of Blacks in Magazine and Television Advertising: 1946 To 1986
Secondary analysis of several major content analysis studies, combined with original data from five magazines in 1986 (including Time, Ladies' Home Journal, and Life), reveal an increase in the black presence in advertising. Data from 1967–1986 television commercials indicate that the black presence, in as many as 16% of commercials in one 1986 study, sometimes approaches the percentage of blacks in the population. This trend, while increasing ov…
Cultural Themes in Brazilian and U.S. Auto Ads: A Cross-Cultural Comparison
Do Brazilian and U.S. advertisers employ different themes in print advertisements? If so, what can we conclude about cross-cultural differences in values? In our study of automobile ads that appeared in the business magazines of Brazil and of the U.S. during the 1970s, we found that (1) urban themes were used more frequently in Brazilian ads than in U.S. ads, (2) leisure themes were used more frequently in U.S. ads than in Brazilian ads, (3) work…

Is Other-Directedness on the Increase? An Empirical Test of Riesman's Theory of Social Character
The historical trend in other-directedness, predicted by Riesman's theory of social character, is examined through a content analysis of 30 years of advertising that appeared in the Ladies' Home Journal and Popular Science magazines. Overall, the results of this trend analysis provide some support for Riesman's theory, especially in the case of a male-oriented publication
