  • Moving beyond the sanctuary paradigm

    Open Access•Paul Perron•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•2023

This article outlines historical shifts in US and Canadian space policies using the sanctuary-contested policy framework. It highlights how sanctuary policies were born out of necessity rather than the pursuit of a peaceful global commons; they were never intended to, and did not, prevent the militarization and weaponization of space. The paper then describes challenges to global space governance and argues that diplomacy will not prevent conflic…

  • Inédit 2 (1984)

    Open Access•Algirdas J Greimas, Paul Perron•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2017

This lecture delivered at Victoria College, University of Toronto, concentrates on defining the status to be accorded to any universals. Underlining his desire that semiotics avoid epistemological dissensions and focus instead on establishing its effectiveness, Greimas recalls that he has adopted an “agnostic” constructivist stance and thus declined to affirm whether universals exist in the world or only in the mind. Following Hjelmslev’s middle …

Bien que le concept de polyphonie doive beaucoup à Bakhtine qui s'en est surtout servi dans ses…

  • Introduction

    Paul Perron•ARTICLE•New Literary History•1989

Julien Greimas's theories mainly through the commentaries of critics,1 or the numerous more or less well-founded applications that often consist in simply projecting the elementary structure of signification (the semiotic square) on various cultural and social objects. However, in the last few years most of A. J. Greimas's major texts have appeared, or are about to appear, in English translation,2 finally giving critics direct access to his work …

  • The Piece of String

Guy De Maupassant, Paul Perron et al.•ARTICLE•New Literary History•1989

T WAS MARKET DAY, and on all the country roads around Goderville the peasants and their wives were making their way toward the town. The men walked slowly, throwing their whole bodies forward at every step of their long crooked legs. They were deformed from pushing the plow, which makes their left shoulders higher and bends their figures sideways; from reaping the grain, when they have to spread their legs so as to keep on their feet; from all th…

  • Greimas's Narrative Grammar

Paul Ricoeur, Frank Collins et al.•ARTICLE•New Literary History•1989•Cited by: 1

WHAT IS INTERESTING about Greimas's narrative grammar is the way it constructs, degree by degree, the necessary conditions for narrativity, starting from a logical model which is the least complex possible and which, initially, includes no chronological import at all. The question is whether, in the attempt to arrive at the structure of those stories which are in fact produced by oral and written traditions, the author, in the successive addition…

enough. It amounts to the postface for a collective work edited by Jean-Marie Floch and entitled De l'abstrait au figuratif, which for technical reasons beyond our control was never published. Thus it would be advisable to read it both as an anticipation of Floch's Petites mythologies de l'oeil et de l'esprit and a wellintentioned interpretation of Felix Thfirlemann's Paul Klee.1 The present text, which goes back some time and is perhaps a bit ou…

  • Description and Narrativity

Algirdas Julien Greimas, Paul Perron et al.•ARTICLE•New Literary History•1989•Cited by: 1

EFORE UNDERTAKING the analysis of textual units we can identify as descriptive we must first of all attempt to situate them within the entire narrative and also distinguish them from other discursive units by using the most objective identification criteria possible. It is indeed desirable that formal segmentation procedures progressively replace our intuitive comprehension of the text and its articulations. To do this it would seem appropriate t…

In it, I undertake to make you aware of all the horrors and all the beauties of a battlefield; my battle is Essling, Essling with all its consequences. A cold man sitting in his armchair must see the countryside, the irregularities of the ground, the masses of men, the strategic events, the Danube, the bridges; must admire the details and the whole of that combat; must hear the artillery; must be…
